How does the Curiosity Rover send photographs back to Earth?

It’s all radio signals. I worked on other missions than Mars Program missions, but it’s not packet switched like on Earth. It’s sort of dedicated circuit switched.

It can transmit to parabolic antennas of the Deep Space Network (DSN),

or by buffering on a couple orbiting imaging satellites now that disk drives have adequate capacity (tape was previously used).

It’s mostly a scheduling problem. Controllers have also learned to manage memory storage better these days (after Spirit and Opportunity).
