What makes kids happy? Watch this video for ideas. (Use this link if using a school chrome. ) Did you notice the posters of what makes them happy?
Assignment: Write a sentence at the top of a blank page that says, " I am happy when______" Finish the sentence. Next, draw a picture of what makes you happy. We will do more with this topic tomorrow.
Optional Extension- 10 minute Read aloud I Need a Monster in My Bed read by Rita Moreno. If using a school chrome then use this link. After watching the video write a sentence for each of the following story parts: Who are the characters? Where is the setting? What happened in the beginning? What was the problem? What was the solution?

Optional Extension Science video Seeing Germs . This is a 10 minute video in which a science experiment is done in a 3rd grade classroom to teach kids about germs and why it's important to wash hands. Our school nurse did a similar experiment with our first grade students so they will be able connect to this experiment. Students, make sure to tell your parents how you can help to stop the spread of germs.

Watch this video on sight words. Then do this sight words page. You don't need to print this; just have your child write each of the words in a sentence on any paper.
Part 1 video- I Am Happy When.... Use any paper you want and write a list of three things you do that make you happy. Leave space in between each list because we will be adding details tomorrow.
Optional Extension: Write a letter to a family member. Let them know 3 things you like about them. This will make them so happy! Don't forget to include your name at the end.

Watch 2 minute interview with Grandma Mary What advice does Grandma Mary have about staying happy? Write down 2 sentences about the advice she gave. Draw a picture to go with it if you want.
Optional Extension: Watch Pete The Cat read aloud and write about the following. "What do you think the author's message is in this story? Write a sentence, or a paragraph, or even a story about it.

Research shows that when we do acts of kindness, it can make us feel happier. Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller & Jen Hill (You can watch this 4 minute read aloud if you want to.) Can you write a list of at least 3 acts of kindness that you could do this weekend? AND THEN PLEASE DO THEM!
Optional Extension : The Rainbow Fish read aloud Listen the story and .... Challenge #1: write a sentence for each of the following: Who are the characters? Where is the setting? What happened in the beginning? What was the problem? What was the solution? Or harder challenge #2: Write a new adventure for the Rainbow Fish. He would be your main character and the setting is of course the ocean. What could the problem be? Maybe he gets trapped in a net? Maybe he gets lost? Or could there be a shark on the loose? How does the problem get solved? Include one paragraph to one page for each part of your story. Here's a story web to get you started.
Optional Extension: Go to the drop down page titled "Extensions". There are a lot of journal prompts for your child. This type of writing can be done the entire school year. Have your child choose a topic and write while you set a timer for 10 minutes. They should write on the same topic for the entire 10 minutes. Encourage them to fill an entire page and remind them to add as much detail as they can.
