Who has helped me? video Today students will be brainstorming about 3 people who have helped them. Later this week they will use these ideas to write a newspaper article about someone who has helped them.
Optional Extension: Go to the drop down page titled "Extensions". There are a lot of journal prompts for your child. This type of writing can be done the entire school year. Have your child choose a topic and write while you set a timer for 10 minutes. They should write on the same topic for the entire 10 minutes. Encourage them to fill an entire page and remind them to add as much detail as they can.
We will be learning how to tell time this week. We spent some time on this unit back in November when it came up in our literacy unit, but we'll be reviewing and going deeper into this concept this week.

Newspaper article day 3 Watch the step by step instructions in this video and create your own newspaper article. For those who need more support, print this.
Optional Writing Extension- Write for 10-15 minutes on the following journal prompt: If you could have any pet in the world. What it would it be and why? Set a timer, keep writing, add detail, don't worry about spelling, just get your ideas down on paper. Journal writing should not include editing; the purpose is to get ideas down on paper an encourage fluent writing.

All science today is optional, but in honor of Earth Day we have put some short (5 minute) Mystery Science lesson about our wonderful planet.
Here are some other fun Earth Day activities brought to us by our friends at the Ogden Nature Center. Again, this is all optional:
Stuck at home and looking for earth day activities. Try one from the list below.
Rock Painting - Have your kiddos find, wash and paint rocks to make garden decor or place along a trail or path. Give them a challenge by asking them to paint many rock to create a shape like a snake or snail.
Scavenger Hunt - Challenge your child to a backyard nature challenge. Use the list attached or create your own. A fun way to do this activity is to write the items on a piece of paper, fold them up and place them in a jar or hat. Have your child pick one item at a time and find it in their backyard. When they find it they can grab a new challenge from the jar.

Mud Pies - Use old tins or containers to make a mud pie. Decorate with things found in nature. You can also challenge your child to make cookies, cupcakes or cakes.
Nature Bracelets - Use packaging tape or masking tape to create a nature bracelet on a walk. Place the tape (sticky side up) around your child's wrist and ask them to collect flowers, leaves, plants and grass as they walk and stick it to their bracelet.

Optional Standing Long Jump challenge for any day of the week: Watch the video and then put your math skills to work and measure yourself doing the standing long jump. Make it a family competition if you'd like or see if you can get your personal best or perhaps see if you can beat Mrs. Correa's best score of 56 inches. (My first tries were around 51 inches.) If you don't have a tape measure, your child can measure using objects like "How many hands or feet or pieces of paper or spoons far did they jump? Be sure to measure every jump you do so you can track your progress. You could also do this for the next 7 days and keep track of each measurement. Did you improve? Here's a score sheet for those that want to try this. Send us a picture of your score sheet!
