Dear Parents and students please click to read the note below. Thanks

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER:

Dear Parents,

I will continue to post stuff for the next two weeks in case you are wanting to continue with your school-at-home routine. You've done a great job teaching your children this year. Your child may have some catching up to do next year but everyone will be fine moving on to Second Grade so enjoy your summer and don't let the learning end.

I will also send an email with this information, but below is an explanation of the Report Card scores.

MAY 2020 FIRST GRADE REPORT CARD

Your child’s End-of-Year Report Card will soon be available on-line. Below is the key we have assigned to the scores 1-4. Please also be aware that this year, because of the unique circumstances due to the soft closure of schools since March, P and N may also appear on your child’s report card.

P (pass) and N (needs improvement) may be assigned if there hasn’t been sufficient time to teach, assess, reteach and provide interventions on any given standard.

4: Most First Grade standards do not lend themselves to a 4. Your child may receive a 4 in Language Arts in the Reading Grade Level Text category if s/he is currently reading fluently and accurately with good comprehension above grade level. All other standards will be graded on a 1-3 scale

3: This marking indicates MASTERY: Your child independently and consistently meets the standard.

2: This marking indicates NEAR MASTERY of the standard. S/he requires a little more practice or a little more coaching, but s/he is almost there.

1: This marking indicates that your child has NOT YET MASTERED the standard and requires additional focused support and interventions. Because we were unable to provide these interventions at school during the final three months we will make sure to address them at the beginning of next year. Remember that all the children are in the same situation. If your child receives a 1 there are or will be interventions in place for next year to support him/her in meeting the standard. Your child is young and resilient and will be just fine, but you may want to incorporate instruction time into your summer schedule to give him/her the advantage s/he may need.

For the students:

I really enjoyed your Habitat ZOOm presentations. I learned so much about so many animals. WOW, you were all so creative with your boxes and you worked hard on your research, I could tell. Thank you for teaching all of us. You did a great job.

Love, Mrs.Welcker

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER:

Dear Parents,

This Thursday, May 21st Maestra Amy and I will have our last “Grab and Go” between 9:00-12:00. This grab and go will be for us to hand out memory books, end of year treat, and other stuff out of desks. We will be out front of the school by the first-grade doors. Please try to come according to the following schedule. This will help to maintain regulations set up with COVID.

You are welcome to bring your child with you that day. Maestra Amy and I would love to wave to them and tell them goodbye. At this “Grab and Go” we cannot have groups of parents and children hanging around in big groups and visiting. It needs to be the same as we have done in the past, where you quickly get your things. As much as we would love to give the children one last hug we are unable to do this. Please let your children know this before coming to pick up items.

****For the grab and go on Thursday, May 21st. If your LAST NAME begins with:

A-G 9:00-10:00

H-P 10:00-11:00

R-Z 11:00-12:00

Thank you for all that you have done to make this year a great one.

Mrs. Welcker

Friday, May 8

**Dear Students, Today I have posted a couple of fun field trips. One is to the African Safari and the other field trip is to Explore the Coral Reef. Have fun on your adventures. I have also posted a Polar Animal Research where you can print and create your own polar animal book. The pages to print are at the beginning of the power point. If you don't want to print the pages but just want to read and see the polar animals scroll down past the pages that you can print.

Today I also want you to draw and paint your animal that you chose for the Habitat Zoom. I put some white paper in the colored folder that mom and dad just picked up last week. Get the bright yellow note and have mom or dad read the instructions for drawing and painting your animal. You will be showing the class this picture at the same time that you present your habitat box and share your report with us next Tuesday and Thursday. I am super excited to see your pictures and your boxes. I also can't wait to learn more about the animals that each of you chose. Have fun today.

Thursday, March 26 INFO. Please Read

My Sweet First Grade Friends,

*For today and Friday there will be no new assignments for the online Wonders Reading. For today and Friday finish or reread any stories/activities that you have not been able to finish or to do. This is also for the Wonders online phonics and grammar. If you do not see something on your "To Do" board from before, that is because I took some assignments off for kids that had already completed the activity. I did not remove your stories so that you would be able to read them again. You are all working super hard. I am so proud of you. I loved seeing and reading your opinion writing assignments about rainbows. I hope you all know how much I love and miss you. Next week I am planning to do a read-a-loud time with you on Tuesdays and Thursdays. My dogs Annie, Pluto, and Belle are begging me to be a part of this read-a-loud time with you. Who knows maybe I will let them pick which book I read. Tell mom and dad to watch for sign ups from Sign Up Genius on Sunday or Monday. I am trying to figure everything out. I can't wait to see your smiling faces. Remember you are the best and can do hard things. Love, Mrs.Welcker

Dear Parents, If you have any questions or concerns please email me. I try to stay caught up on emails daily. If by chance I have missed yours please email me back. I am working extremely hard to try to meet the needs of all the kids. I know this is a lot of online stuff for the kids and not as fun as if they were actually in the classroom, but it's so hard to do some of the things that I do in the classroom everyday over the computer. I am going to try and make Fridays a catch up day for any work you haven't done. I am also going to include some science links for Fridays and some virtual field trips. I'm excited about these things and think the kids will be too. If you have any other ideas/thoughts/suggestions for things that I could possibly do to help the kids please share them with me. I appreciate all that you are doing at this time. I know this is not easy for you and has been a challenge. I feel your pain. This has been a challenging time for me to learn many new and difficult things that I have never needed to know or use. I'm sure my brain feels like my sweet little first grade friends brains trying to learn Spanish. Ha Ha Also we will be handing out new packets of stuff on THIS MONDAY March 30th. It will be by your last name- A-F (8:00-9:00) G-L (9:00-10:00) M-S (10:00-11:00) T-Z (11:00-Noon) You should have received an email from Principal Tillman today. If you are unable to pick up materials and want them please let me know and I can figure something out.

Thanks,

Mrs. Welcker

**I will be reading a story today to the kids at 11:00 and 1:00. Login with the same ZOOM link as you do for Maestra Amy. I will do these on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:00 and 1:00.

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for picking up the new materials for the next month. For "Word Work" we will be using the UNIT 4 Purple Wonders book. I also gave you the unit 5 book because we will start that in 2 weeks. You do not need to turn these pages in. All Opinion Writing pages will need to be sent to me via email. I will look at them and grade them from my email.

I included a big Easter Egg with designs on it and also a bunny with sunglasses. Please do not do these until I assign them. I will be doing a video and a story on what to do with these.

The Easter packet can be done as an optional fun packet at anytime. I also included a couple of pieces of white paper if the kids want to use them for the directed drawing. The kids should also have a spiral bound notebook with a red or blue cover in their tote box. They can use this to do directed drawings in as well.

The "Sunshine" Book is a lined paper book that can be used for writing spelling/high frequency words, practice spelling tests, and final spelling tests. Please email me the score for each spelling test on Fridays.

Handwriting pages are in the bright blue handwriting book that is in the tote box.

Journal pages are in the yellow folder in the tote box.

Scholastic News Magazine and Science Spin Magazine. I will be using these as reading assignments and science.

Hello Kids,

I hope you all have a wonderful week. Guess What? Yesterday when I went to the school to get your materials ready I found 2 packages with a special little note. I opened the packages and read the teeny tiny note. It was from the Book Fairy. I put the story she gave you inside your yellow writing folders. Here is the letter she wrote.

"It has been so quiet at your school! I miss seeing all of you. I hope you like your new book. I'm glad that I can still bring you books. I know all of you are trying hard to be the best you can be just like the little seed in this book. I am saving your last book for when you get back to Legacy. I can't wait to give it to you. I already know that you will LOVE it. I hear that your parents get to be your teachers right now. I hope you are helpful and kind and hard-working for them just like you are for Mrs. Welcker and the 6th grade buddies you have at school." Love, The Book Fairy

Work hard this week. I love and miss you like crazy. You are super stars. Love, Mrs. Welcker

Science:

Art: Bunny Art With Sunglasses-

This is in your yellow folder or tote box I sent home. If you lost it you can click on the link below to print a new one out. ***Save this art project for your special book I am making.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. [FREE] Fun Easter Bunny Craft template ***Click on this link to watch a video of how to make the bunny.

  2. Choose either straight lines in each section or different patterns. I would suggest lead pencil first and then when the artist is happy, they can go over their lines with a black marker. (Watch the above video to show kids ideas of different designs they can do on each section of the bunny.)

  3. When finished drawing the designs/lines in each section, cut out the bunny.

  4. Glue the bunny onto the piece of black construction paper I gave you with your tote box. If you don't have the black paper, skip this step. BUT write your name in pencil on the back of the bunny.

  5. Then, cut out the sunglasses.

  6. Glue the sunglasses onto the bunny head.

  7. If you would like to add a little light pink in the ears and on the cheeks with your pink crayon you can do that now.

Daily 5:

  1. Word Work- Wonders Workbook Unit 4 Week 5 Pages 269 & 272. On page 269 you will be changing letters in words to make a new word. On page 272 you will be taking away the FINAL (Last) sound of the word. Then write the new word on the line. On page 272 you will also be highlighting words by the sounds that the /y/ makes. (The /y/ can make a Long e sound, a Long i sound, and it can also make the regular sound that /y/ always says. You will use 3 colors to outline the words by their sound. In the book it says to use green, orange, and blue. If you do not have these colors you can pick any 3 colors you have.

  2. Tech Time- Lexia: 10-15 minutes

  3. Work on Writing- Opinion Writing- Today and tomorrow you will be working on your opinion piece Is the Easter Bunny real or make believe? This paper should be in the yellow folder with all of the stuff I gave you with your tote box. If you do NOT have this paper, you can use a page from your morning sunshine book or any other page you have. Please follow these steps today and tomorrow as you do your opinion writing.

Writing Steps:

  1. Do your introduction: (State your opinion)

Example: In my opinion I think that the Easter Bunny is real. OR Do you believe that the Easter Bunny is real? I do, let me tell you why I think the Easter Bunny is real.

  1. List 2 reasons today that support your opinion. ***We will do the other reason tomorrow. If you run out of room on the front or your paper, turn your paper over to the back.

  2. The last step is your closing. **We will do this step tomorrow. Example: Now you know why the Easter Bunny is real.

  3. Now that your writing is complete you will need to check that you did these things.

  • Reread through your writing to see if it makes sense and sounds right.

  • Did you write your name and the date at the top of your paper?

  • Did you start your sentences with a capital letter?

  • Did you capitalize ALL words that need to be capitalized? Proper Nouns

  • Did you use proper punctuation at the end of your sentences?

  • Do you have ALL the parts of an opinion piece? (Opening, 3 reasons, and a closing)

  • Did you do your best writing?

  • If you have done all of these things you are ready to color the Easter Bunny at the top of the page. This step is optional.

  • Have mom or dad email this paper to Mrs.Welcker.

Art: Bunny with Sunglasses **This should be in your tote box or yellow folder I sent home with you. Click on the link by #1 to watch a video of how to make this bunny. This video shows the kids how to make designs etc. If you don't have the bunny you can also print another one from the same link below.

Here’s how to make the bunny:

  1. [FREE] Fun Easter Bunny Craft template Click on this link to watch the video on how to make the bunny with designs.

  2. Using a draw pen or thin point black marker, draw straight lines in some sections and different patterns in other sections. (spirals, dots, zig-zag, ovals, hearts, stars, etc.) This looks best if you don't have the same design right next to another section with the same design. You can repeat a design, but just do it in different areas and different sections away from each other.

  3. Once the designs are completed, cut out the bunny.

  4. Glue the bunny onto the piece of black construction paper. If you don't have the piece of black construction paper SKIP this step and just write your name lightly with pencil on the back of the rabbit.

  5. Lightly outline the outer edge of the eye with a light blue crayon.

  6. Using a light pink crayon you can LIGHTLY color in the middle of the ears and add some cheeks.

  7. Using a black think marker or black crayon LIGHTLY draw on some whiskers by the mouth area.

  8. Cut out the sunglasses.

  9. Glue the sunglasses on to the bunny.

  10. With a white crayon, write your name in the bottom corner of the black paper.

  11. Admire the AMAZING bunny you just made. Give yourself a pat on the back, and tell your artist hands "Thank You." Save this bunny art in a special place so that we can add it to your special memory book I am making for you at the end of the year.

Dear Parents, It was absolutely the best treat for me to see you at the parade on Thursday. The parade was exactly what my teacher heart needed. I miss the kids terribly and needed to see them. It brought tears to my eyes to see my sweet little first graders and their families beaming with happiness. I couldn't help but smile as I read your signs. It was a beautiful day for me. Thank you.

Also, thank you for the unexpected and much appreciated teacher appreciation gift. My heart is extremely full of love and appreciation for all that you did to make me feel extra special during teacher appreciation week. I know that this time right now is very tough financially, emotionally, and mentally for so many families so I can't thank you enough for what you did for me. I am excited to use the money to buy some flowers and plants for my yard. I love planting flowers and working in my yard in the summer. As I watch these beautiful flowers grow and bloom in the following weeks, it will remind me of all the wonderful families and my sweet little first grade friends that love me and have blessed me this year. Thank you , thank you for giving me the best gift of all by allowing me to share your kids. They are absolutely priceless. I love you all. Love, Mrs.Welcker
