Mrs. Halls

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER: (Read this at the start of the new week)

For the parents:

I have included the next two weeks in case you are wanting to continue with your school-at-home routine. You've done a great job teaching your children this year. Your child may have some catching up to do next year but everyone will be fine moving on to Second Grade so enjoy your summer and don't let the learning end.

Below is an explanation of the Report Card scores.

MAY 2020 FIRST GRADE REPORT CARD

Your child’s End-of-Year Report Card will soon be available on-line. Below is the key we have assigned to the scores 1-4. Please also be aware that this year, because of the unique circumstances due to the soft closure of schools since March, P and N may also appear on your child’s report card.

P (pass) and N (needs improvement) may be assigned if there hasn’t been sufficient time to teach, assess, reteach and provide interventions on any given standard.

4: Most First Grade standards do not lend themselves to a 4. Your child may receive a 4 in Language Arts in the Reading Grade Level Text category if s/he is currently reading fluently and accurately with good comprehension above grade level. All other standards will be graded on a 1-3 scale

3: This marking indicates MASTERY: Your child independently and consistently meets the standard.

2: This marking indicates NEAR MASTERY of the standard. S/he requires a little more practice or a little more coaching, but s/he is almost there.

1: This marking indicates that your child has NOT YET MASTERED the standard and requires additional focused support and interventions. Because we were unable to provide these interventions at school during the final three months we will make sure to address them at the beginning of next year. Remember that all the children are in the same situation. If your child receives a 1 there are or will be interventions in place for next year to support him/her in meeting the standard. Your child is young and resilient and will be just fine, but you may want to incorporate instruction time into your summer schedule to give him/her the advantage s/he may need.

For the students:

I really enjoyed your Habitat ZOOm presentations. I learned so much about so many animals. WOW, you were all so creative with your boxes and you worked hard on your research, I could tell. Thank you for teaching all of us. You did a great job.

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER: (Read this at the start of the new week)

For the parents:

Thanks for having your child finish the birthday slides. The rest of the assignments are for your child to do as time allows over the summer. Please come to our End of School parade. It will be on Friday, May 29th at 9:00am. It will follow the same route that our earlier parade followed. It did my heart good to see everyone.

For the students:

Thank you for working so hard these last several months. I hope you have the best summer ever. The bubble wand in your box is to celebrate the last day of school. So go out and have a blast on Friday. Bring it with you to watch the parade. I will bring mine too. If you can't be at the parade, remember that I love you and hope that you have a wonderful summer.

Birthday letters: We have always written birthday letters to each other and I didn't want that to stop because of the different circumstances. You will find a hyperlink that will take you to a google slide. Each student will pick whatever slide they want, as long as no one else has written in it, and write a letter to the birthday boy or girl.

PARENTS OF THE BIRTHDAY PEOPLE: If you want to print the slides out or even duplicate the google slideshow so the student can keep them that it is up to you. Try and do it by the end of the week though because the link will be gone after that.

A NOTE FROM MRS. HALLS: (Read this at the start of the new week.)

For the parents:

My goal this school year has been to help your child with two things.

  1. I figuratively took your child's brain at the beginning of the year. I gave it back after Christmas with every needful thing filed away inside. Your child knows what it takes to be a learner every day - (self-motivation at work). Your child knows how to get the most out of the learning environment and does it - (self-reliance at work). Your child can recognize roadblocks to learning and knows and uses strategies to clear the roadblocks away - (self-monitoring at work). Watch for these skills in your child.

  2. I have wanted every child to learn to be readers, writers and mathematicians. Some things may come easily to a child while other things will take hard work. When something is hard we need others to help scaffold our learning. I was that person while the children were at school. Our third-grade and sixth-grade buddies have also played an important role at school. Now you provide that scaffold. I have referred to you throughout the year as your child's buddy at home. If your child doesn't finish something, doesn't understand something, needs to practice something or correct something, you will continue to be the one they go to at home. Monitor your child's work load consistent with individual skill level, maturity level, and ability to focus. You know your child better than anyone else so: If your child NEEDS READING PRACTICE - Your child should spend more time reading. RAZ-kids is the place to go to find leveled readers. I have assigned your child a level based on assessments given prior to our new normal. To enhance the development of reading skills and strategies make sure that your child spends time on Lexia every day. Lexia levels 6-9 are first grade levels and I would like all children to complete level 9 by the end of first grade. If your child NEEDS MORE TIME ON LEXIA - Your child should spend more time on Lexia. If your child NEEDS INSTRUCTION ON THE PHONICS SKILLS for the week (found in Wonders) - Your child should spend more time on the activities available on the Wonders website. If your child NEEDS TO MASTER WRITING CONVENTIONS AND/OR ORGANIZATION - Your child should write more. If your child NEEDS MATH SUPPORT - Your child should spend more time doing math. That is how I teach at school as well. My site page has a lot on it, much more than your child NEEDS to do. I am also sending a lot of work home, more than your child NEEDS to do. These are resources to help you help your child. Help your child do what they most NEED to do. Email me if you have questions but trust yourself to be the buddy that your child needs.

For the student:

Guess What? The Book Fairy came and left books for us. I put the book in your box so that you would be sure to get it. She wrote a "little" note like she always does. It said,

"It has been so quiet at your school! I miss seeing all of you. I hope you like your new book. I'm glad that I can still bring you books. I know all of you are trying hard to be the best you can be just like the little seed in this book. I am saving your last book for when you get back to Legacy. I can't wait to give it to you. I already know that you will LOVE it. Mrs. Halls said that your parents get to be your buddies right now. I hope you are helpful and kind and hard-working for them just like you are for Mrs. Halls and the buddies you have at school."

I miss you all so much. Be kind and good and remember to use all the things that are in your brain. Many of your parents have emailed me to say what good, hard workers you are. Keep it up!

Love, Mrs. Halls

SPRING BREAK: NO ASSIGNMENTS. Have Fun! This would be a great week to color and paint your crayon resist egg. They look so nice up in a window. The bunny copter is fun to make and play with as well. Once it is ready and the paper clip is secured on the bottom you can either drop it from up high or throw it up by holding the ears down and throwing it up. Then watch it spin as it falls to the ground. I also included a little Easter activity packet in your box. Those would also be fun to do this week before Easter.

Doreen Halls is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

A NOTE FROM MRS. HALLS: (Read this at the start of the new week.)

For the parents:

  • Our psychologist Miss Molsberry has put together a website that has ideas and activities for reducing your child's anxiety level during this time. Take a look if you are interested. https://sites.google.com/alpinedistrict.org/mentalhealthwebsite-lmtev/home.

  • Get ready for our first Zoom video get together and teacher read aloud. Let's get together on Wednesday, April 15th at 11:00am. I will send an email invitation to you. You will need to click on the link and then wait in the waiting room until I invite your child in. Zoom will give you simple instructions for joining the meeting. I will have the microphone on as the children enter, then turn it off as I welcome them and read a story. I will give everyone a chance to say "Hi" to each other or I may try Sharing Circle. This may not run smoothly this first time, but hopefully we will enjoy the experience together anyway.

For the student:

I hope you had a fun Spring Break. Maybe your parents would let you write an email letter to me so that you can tell me all about it. Also, I have learned how we can all get together while I read a story online. I will tell your parents what to do so that you can join in. It will be fun to actually see your face again and you will be able to see me and our classmates. I'm going to try to do Sharing Circle, so be sure to have something in your mind to share because we haven't been able to talk to each other in a long time.

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER: (Read this at the start of the new week)

For the parents:

I am including this website again. I think that Miss Molsberry will be updating it weekly.

I also want to remind you that your child has a password to e-spark for access at home. This information was one of the original access accounts on the card in the back of your child's homework folder (the card where the Lexia log-in information is). Try it out if you are looking for something new.

A couple of you have taken pictures of your child's writing and sent it to me. I love that I can see how that is coming along. You do not need to do this but if you are able, I will try to offer simple feedback- no different from the feedback you are giving- but sometimes writing for a different audience brings added focus and a desire to add more details and be more careful with the conventions of writing and neatness.

Finally, I am hoping that all the children will be able to finish the Lexia lessons designed specifically for first grade. These are levels 6-9. Please encourage your child to spend time on Lexia as they work toward this goal.

For the students:

Last week was amazing because I got to see most of you either during our Zoom meeting or on the parade route. It made me so happy to see your smiles and the awesome posters that you made. It was cool to see where you live if you were standing out in your yards. If you couldn't be at the parade I MISSED YOU. Hopefully everyone can get on our Zoom meeting that we will be having this Wednesday at 11:00. I will read a story every Wednesday. We won't usually have sharing circle because that makes the meeting too long but I am glad that you all had something to share last week. I told your parents that I would love to see some of your journal or opinion writing pieces. Don't forget to hold your pencil right and make the letters right and do your neatest work. Then, if your mom or dad can take a picture of your work and send it to me I will be able to know about what you have been doing and thinking. See you on Wednesday.

We will have our last Grab and Go materials pick up this Thursday April 30th - Mrs. Nielsen will be putting the boxes out like she has done in the past. They can be picked up where the First Graders line up for school. Our class boxes will be outside for pick-up from 9:00-10:00am. Please wait in your car or at a safe distance until you can safely get your child's box. These materials will get you through the end of the school year. The box that the materials are in is the habitat box for our Habitat ZOOm project, so don't lose or discard it. Instructions for the project are found in the red writing folder in that box. Please help your child with this since we will be sharing them with each other during our ZOOm meeting on May 13th and I don't want anyone to feel bad that they aren't ready. This is a big project so if you need to let other things go while you work on this, it will be fine. In fact, please don't stress over anything because any work or assignments that your child doesn't get to before school ends, or anything that you don't feel your child is currently ready for, you can save to work on over the summer. This will be a great way to keep your child engaged in summer learning.

For the students:

Remember to log on to our Zoom story time on Wednesday at 11:00am. I'm planning to meet every Wednesday at 11:00 and don't want anyone to miss it. You will notice that it was Andrew's birthday last Saturday. The link for making the birthday slide show is new so I hope that you were able to write a letter to him. We will be writing a letter to everyone who missed getting a birthday or un-birthday letter from the class. I'm excited to report that the Book Fairy hid your new book somewhere in your Grab and Go box. Here is what her letter said:

Dear First Graders,

I am so excited about this month's book. It is my all-time favorite. I know that Mrs. Halls already read it to you. Remember how you kept telling her to keep reading? You didn't want her to stop. I didn't either. Some of you might not be able to read this book all by yourself yet. It is a long book and might be too hard for some of you. That's OK. If it is too hard don't forget that your buddies - mom and dad - love to read too and they might read it to you. Or, you could save it for when you are in 2nd grade. That works too.

Love, The Book Fairy

Did you know that this Sunday is Mother's Day. You can make a paper flower for your mom. All the pieces that you need are in a little packet in the box your parents picked up for you last week. If you write something you love about your mom on each flower petal it will make it even more special. The opinion writing assignment for this week is My Mom is Best. You can write more than three reasons why you think your mom is the best if you want. Make sure you do your neatest handwriting and coloring because your mom will want to keep this forever. Be extra nice to your mom this week too. Your parents will also help you get started on your Habitat ZOOm project this week. I am really looking forward to that.

A NOTE FROM YOUR TEACHER: (Read this at the start of the new week)

For the parents: Ms. Molsberry updates her site each week if you are interested and don't forget to check out Legacy's Just for Fun site.

Our Habitat ZOOm is this week. We will start the ZOOm meeting right at 11:00 so that everyone will have the chance to present their habitats. You may want to log on a few minutes early.

FYI: You may have received word that May 12 is the last day for new instruction. I am still planning the Habitat ZOOm for May 13 but that will be our final Zoom meeting for the year. I have also prepared the web pages through May 29 for those of you who would like to continue to see a lay-out for materials sent home and instruction you might still like for your child to receive. I believe that you will also continue to have access to the embedded links on the website. It would also be nice if you would encourage your child to do a birthday or un-birthday slide for all the children who didn't get one yet this year. If your child is one of those children, make sure that they take a look at their birthday slides after the posted date.

If you will not be returning to this website for the remaining weeks, please take a minute to read the letters (like this one) at the beginning of those weeks. You will find Report Card information in next week's letter. I will also be copying it onto an email.

For the students:

This is our big week. I hope you are all ready for our Habitat ZOOm. I am excited to see what animals you have chosen and the habitat you have created. It will be fun to listen to everyone's presentations. This will be our last Zoom get together and I look forward to seeing everyone. If you haven't joined us for story time please try to make it to our Habitat ZOOm. That will be our last chance to see each other all together and it will be a good time to say goodbye. Have a FUN summer and don't forget to read and write and play and relax. I am so glad that you were in my class this year.

Lots of love from Mrs. Halls
