Local area

Rio Grande do Sul is a state in the southern part of Brazil, bordering Argentina in the south and Uruguay in the west. The official language of Brazil is Portuguese. The state receives 2 million international tourists annually and boasts beaches, mountains, wineries, and a "Little Italy," as a result of Italian immigration.


We will be working and living in Porto Alegre. This is a large city and there are many restaurants and shops. More information about Porto Alegre to come soon.

THE WEATHER

Rio Grande do Sul has a humid, subtropical climate, with warm summers, cool winters, and regular rain year-round. During June, expect autumn weather. The state of Rio Grande do Sul is entering its coldest months of the year. Volunteers should be prepared for work outdoors in potentially wet and cold conditions. Bring a good rain jacket, sturdy and waterproof footwear, and multiple layers - t-shirts will be provided as always, but will not be enough to stay warm. During this time, the weather can be between 10 and 17 degrees Celsius or between 50 and 62 Fahrenheit.
