The heavy rains in April and May of 2024 in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul did not slow down for weeks, resulting in over 170 casualties, significant landslides, a dam collapse, and over 600,000 displaced. The prevalence of flooding has been Brazil’s most devastating in over 80 years, with water still slowly receding well over a month after the rains.
All Hands and Hearts started on the ground in Garibaldi, supporting vulnerable communities that were in urgent need of debris removal and donation distribution. The team then moved to the state capital of Porto Alegre, where it developed scopes of work including food distribution and home cleaning.
