Aldo Leopold Charter School

Watercolor Landscapes

To begin this assignment, the middle school students learned about line art and landscapes, but they also used their watercolor skills gained from the previous Beyond Borders project.

The middle school students selected a photo of an actual mountain range to inspire them for their lined mountains. We then practiced creating shadows with vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. Once they decided which technique they enjoyed the most, they created their final landscape on watercolor paper with ink.

The final touch was to add watercolor with a 'wet on wet' painting technique. This involves adding water to the paper before adding paint, allowing the colors to mix independently. Some students even added a bit of salt to create a star like pattern in the cold winter sky!
