Middle and High School Artwork

Reflected in the Eye

High school students began the visual art semester with getting to know the amazing artist M.C. Escher. We focused on Escher's Eye, drawn with graphite in 1946, which includes an erie reflection of a skull.

After the students were given a tutorial on drawing pencils, such as the difference between B and H pencils and their uses, we learned about the basic structure of drawing an eye.

Once the proportions and shading of the human eye were mastered, the students began to develop an idea for the added surrealist twist-the reflection. The reflection makes the viewer pause and wonder the true meaning of the artist's creative intension.

Beyond Borders

Water animals and watercolor, what a perfect combination! The middle school students selected an animal that lives in the water to study for this project. The students looked closely at their chosen water animal and drew it numerous times to master the animal's unique characteristics.

We also dove into learning the techniques of watercolor paint. We created a watercolor study to help prepare us for the final painting.

Finally, the students had to remember to only add color within the rectangle border. Everything outside this border would be completed with only ink. However, their water animal would be colored even outside the rectangle to create overlapping and a sense of depth.

Inked Hybrids

High school students were able to master the beloved art medium of Micron pens for their second project of the semester. Each high school student received a pack of Micron pens, which included a variety of tip sizes. Each sized pen has a different purpose when inking a drawing.

The students then experience an assortment of inking techniques with the pens, such as stippling, hatching, and cross-hatching. All of these skills were then applied to their fascinating and unique hybrid creations. Can you determine which two creatures these artists mixed?

Watercolor Landscapes

To begin this assignment, the middle school students learned about line art and landscapes, but they also used their watercolor skills gained from the previous Beyond Borders project.

The middle school students selected a photo of an actual mountain range to inspire them for their lined mountains. We then practiced creating shadows with vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. Once they decided which technique they enjoyed the most, they created their final landscape on watercolor paper with ink.

The final touch was to add watercolor with a 'wet on wet' painting technique. This involves adding water to the paper before adding paint allowing the colors to mix independently. Some students even added a bit of salt to create a star like pattern in the cold winter sky!

Contour Drawings

One line to rule them all! Ever tried drawing something without picking your pencil up off the paper? Well if so, you created a contour drawing!

High school students looked over a variety of contour artwork and began to understand the complicity, AND simplicity of this unique art form.

The students developed their own design and then were able to determine what sort of art medium would best fit. Some choose to incorporate mixed media, while others only used ink. Can you follow the line throughout the whole piece?

Radial Sound Art

For their final project, the middle school students learned about the famous and unique artist Wassily Kandinsky. Kandinsky is well known for creating abstract paintings from what came to his mind while listening to music.

The students selected a song to be inspired by to create these beautiful radial abstract pieces. Wondering about what song inspired the artists? Click the slideshow links below to discover!

Doodle of the Week!

Oodles and oodles of doodles! What is the Doodle of the Week you wonder? Well, each week was given a theme, either by Mz. Phillips or the students, for everyone to draw in their own personal style and interpretation.

The student's drawing could be created with any medium they wanted, so you will see everything from paint and digital to just graphite.

<--- Here is a list of the Middle and High school themes from the 2020 Fall semester.

And as always, Happy Doodling!

Independent Projects

I always encourage students to apply the skills and techniques gained in visual art class to their own artwork outside of class. Here are some independent pieces submitted by the students for the art show. They are so amazing! Enjoy!
