All ED 272 Residents will be meeting VIRTUALLY for the remainder of the term.
The examinations of the CSET are criterion-referenced. A criterion-referenced test is designed to measure an examinee's knowledge and skills in relation to an established standard rather than in relation to the performance of other examinees.
Each test in the program is designed to measure a specific set of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities reflecting the subject area of the credential sought. The sets of subject matter requirements for all examinations of the CSET were defined in conjunction with committees of California educators and approved by the CTC.
Test materials matched to these subject matter requirements were developed using, in part, textbooks, California curriculum frameworks, California K–12 Student Academic Content Standards, Common Core State Standards as adopted by California, teacher education curricula, and CTC preparation program standards. The materials were developed through consultation with California educators, teacher educators, and other content and assessment specialists, and were approved by the Commission.

The number of subtests, as well as the assessment length, content, and structure is specific to each content area. The table below indicates the number of subtests for each content area. 220 is a passing score for all subtests, regardless of content area.
For specific information about each subtest, go to the CTC website and select your content area.
Finding testing centers and appointments can be a little tricky. Here is a short screencast that shows how you can find testing appointments prior to signing up or paying.

How long do I need to wait between attempts?
The waiting period between subtest attempts is 45 days. This applies to specific subsets. For example, if you take the Multiple Subject Subtest 1, you need to wait 45 days to retake that subtest. However, you may take Multiple Subject subtests 2 and/or 3 immediately.
Online Proctored Tests
For the first time, select CSET subtests are available for remote testing - which means you can take the assessment from your house or classroom. Here is the CTC’s informational page about online proctoring, and here is the registration page. Here are a few items to note:
The following CSET subtests are available for online proctoring:
Multiple Subject subtests 1 and 3
English subtests 1-4
Social Science subtests 1-3
Online-proctored tests will only be available for 1 week each month
There are no breaks allowed (if you go to a testing center, you may take a break but your test time still runs)
You need to have a HIGHLY reliable internet connection. If there are any connectivity issues, you test may be voided.

Each subfolder houses multiple constructed response questions, as well as sample/exemplar answers.
Incoming teachers may use an academic major to meet the Subject Matter Requirements, if it matches their credential area. This means that if a candidate’s major matches the credential they are pursuing, they will not need to take any CSETs.
*Majors need to exactly match the content of the credential you are pursuing. The CTC will also accept applied majors (i.e. Applied Math) and single subject areas that have additional modifiers (i.e. Environmental Biology and Art History).
Alder will review transcripts from undergrad, grad, and community colleges for specific CSET domains. This means that individual courses can be used to meet the SMR for specific CSET subtests. This is not only new, but complex and nuanced as well. Alder will review all candidates' transcripts, and we will have an effective and efficient process in place by the end of January. We appreciate your patience and grace. For context, the following must be true for any course that can be used:
Must be completed at a regionally-accredited college or university
Must be baccalaureate degree-applicable (non-remedial)
Must be earned with a "C-" grade or higher ("Pass" and "Credit" grades meet this requirement)
No unit minimum
If you want to get a better understanding of which tests you need to take, you can fill out a self-audit. As a reminder, Alder will officially audit each resident’s transcript. Completing this worksheet does not guarantee that an individual will meet SMR. The purpose of this worksheet is to give residents a clear idea of which domains and subtests they will likely meet using coursework, so they can start preparing for and taking CSETs immediately. Alder has a lot of transcripts to audit, and it is a time-consuming, yet important process. We do not want you to wait to take CSETs if it’s clear that there is not enough coursework to meet the domains of each subtest.
Below are the individual worksheets for each content area:
