Alder GSE recognizes the dynamic process in preparing for the residency year. One important preparation activity is to satisfy the Subject Matter requirements before beginning the program. Residents who satisfy these requirements prior to enrollment are best positioned to balance the other residency demands. Therefore, Alder GSE issues the following guidance and benchmarks:
We strongly recommend residents satisfy the Subject Matter Requirement (SMR) before starting the residency program.
Benchmark #1: August 5th To ensure success in the fall term, residents need to complete the Subject Matter Requirement by August 5th.
Final Deadline: December 6 Residents must satisfy SMR and BSR by December 6 to qualify for spring term registration. Alder is committed to the success of all residents and will support residents unable to meet this deadline through exploration of other potential pathways to completion.
California Subject Examinations for Teachers
The CSET is a criterion-referenced test designed to measure a specific set of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities reflecting the subject area of the credential sought.
The CSEST is one way to meet the Subject Matter Requirement (SMR).
All candidates are required to take the 2-4 subject specific subtest. The specific number and content of subtests depend on credential area.
Reading Instruction Competence Assessment
The RICA assess candidates knowledge and skills important for the provision of effective reading instruction. It is made up of 3 separate subtests.
The RICA is only required for residents seeking the following credentials:
Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials and
Education Specialist Instruction Credentials (special education)
Completing RICA is a requirement for a credential recommendation.
Educative Teacher Performance Assessment
The edTPA is a performance-based, subject-specific assessment that emphasizes, measures and supports the skills and knowledge all teachers need from Day 1 in the classroom.
All residents will submit the edTPA. It consists of 3 Tasks (1-planning; 2-instruction; 3-assessment).
Multiple Subject residents will complete Tasks 1-3 in mathematics, and a 4th Task focussed on literacy.
There will be time to resubmit the edTPA (if needed) prior to credential recommendation in June 2025.
