The discovery phase involves a collaborative meeting in which knowledgeable about the current process is shared to create two tools for improvement--a process map and a list of rubs.
A process map is an entire process from the initial first step until the process termination. The current UAF Academic Program Review Process Map (see the flowchart below) depicts the steps and decision points in the current process. Steps are depicted by rectangles and decision points by diamonds. Note that the flowchart is available as a single doc for digital viewing and scrolling and divided by pages for printing hard copies.
A "rub" is a step in the process that was challenging, which includes a list of barriers to optimal productivity, quality, accuracy, and satisfaction in the current process. This describes the issues to be solved through process improvement. As a result, the rubs in this process are part of the results of discovery.
Guided walk through the Current Process Map: In this video, UAF Process Improvement Project Manager, Amber Leytem, guides you through the current UAF Academic Program Review process map.
Results of Discovery helped us with the redesign.
