In January, school leaders make presentations to individual grade levels about options for course selection. Presentations target students and parents, often together. The most complex course selection takes place in grade 10 because students will select what they will study through to graduation. Courses are selected in PowerSchool during February. Further information about the course selection timeline, including the presentations and information sessions dates, will be communicated from the High School Office.
Overview:
The schedule is developed in April of the previous school year based on the course selections that students made. Ideally, the schedule is committed by mid-June.
OPENING OF SCHOOL IN AUGUST:
Counselors load all new students’ schedules on their first day at work
All students receive their official schedule via PowerSchool two days before school begins.
This date is communicated to families at the end of the previous school year.
Counselors contact students before Day 1 if there are concerns/gaps in the schedule.
Counselors work with students to make changes prior to Day 1 following the guidelines in Open Course Change Days and all course changes further for IBDP courses.
New students receive their draft schedule at the New Student Orientation Day.
Students will attend the classes they have been scheduled during Days 1,2,3 and 4.
There will be no student-initiated course changes during Days 1,2,3 and 4.
Course changes can be initiated by a teacher. In this case, the teacher should discuss this with the counselor.
SEMESTER ONE: COURSE CHANGES
Four days are available for students to change their courses after the semester has started without an appointment; these are the Open Course Change Days. They occur on the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th days of the semester. If a student did not initiate a course change on Day 5-8, students must make a special appointment with the counselor to discuss a course change on Day 9 - 13. The last day of course changes will be Day 13. Course Change Days apply to new students who are off-campus and to returning students who may also be off-campus due to extenuating circumstances.
On Day 5- 8 of the semester, there are four assigned days where any student who wants to change a course may do so by coming to the counselor during the following blocks in semester 1:
● Grade 9: Breaks, Lunch, and Access
● Grade 10: Breaks, Lunch, and Access
● Grade 11: Supervised Study
● Grade 12: Supervised Study
Guidelines for changes during Open Course Change Days and all course changes further:
● For Grades 9 & 10, only one elective change is permitted.
● For Grades 11 & 12, there is one opportunity to change your courses.
● Course changes are only possible if it will make a bigger class smaller. This is to encourage balancing between sections.
● If a course change will increase a section enrollment to greater than 18 approval is needed from the HS Principal.
● Languages are a pathway therefore there are no changes to language courses.
● Language changes need to be approved by the Languages Learning Leader.
● SSST changes need to be approved by the SSST coordinator.
● After Day 13, any changes to IBDP courses will require completion of the IBDP course change form with teacher, parent, IBDP Coordinator and Counselor approval.
Any change after Day 13, will only be considered under extenuating circumstances and the teacher, counselor, administrator and parent must be involved in this process.
The student should discuss the proposed change with the teacher first. There is a form required to be completed by the student in these circumstances.
SEMESTER TWO: COURSE CHANGES
The overall aim is that there should be minimal course changes at the beginning of S2. Course changes should be completed as quickly as possible in order to have the least impact on S2 Courses.
● Changes to S2 courses can be made after S1 Courses are finalized only if they do not affect core classes.
● Course changes should be completed by the end of last week of S1.
In Semester 2 students should go to their counselor during:
● Grade 9: Grade 9: Breaks, Lunch, and Access
● Grade 10: Breaks, Lunch, and Access
● Grade 11: Supervised Study
● Grade 12: Supervised Study
