Source : sanitation workers sweeping

  • Currently, sanitation workers use sweeping brooms for collecting dry-leaves waste from different places.

  • The task of collecting dry leaves by sweeping or using a pick-up rake is time consuming, tedious and requires efficient manpower.

This waste is usually collected in green trash as shown in Image

Sometimes, the waste is collected and transported in vehicles allotted by the government to a place for disposing or processing as shown in the image.

The above-shown methods are ideal ways of collecting and disposing of the dry-leaves-waste.

However, at many places, the workers burn this waste after collecting, instead of proper processing which leads to many issues related to the environment and hence, the health of the living beings.

In addition to the above-mentioned methods, Garden and farm owners use different equipment/ tools such as various types of pick-up rakes, leaf-blowers, vacuum leaves collector etc. Plus, the agencies also use bigger and fancier tools for better and faster cleaning.

Hand Leaf Grabs: Lawn owners may use this to collect leaves.

The grabs have flimsy handles. They may not be helpful in collecting leaves at a larger scale (bigger pile of leaves) This also requires effective manpower.

Leaf blower

Leaf Blower: Equipment used for cleaning roads, lawns by blowing leaves away.

Leaf Blowers are heavy to handle for a long period of time thus it would be difficult when leaves are to be collected from a larger area. The Blowers contain oil and gasoline as fuel which is a risk factor for fuel exploding. Leaf Blowers also lead to a noisy environment which negatively affects the surrounding habitats and residents (Gillespie, 2020).

Vacuum Leaves Collector: The vacuum succumbs the leaves into the small bag inside the machine.

Vacuum leaves collectors generate a lot of noise disturbing the environment. Also, these collectors are quite heavy which makes it difficult to handle for a longer time. The relatively higher cost is also a factor of problem.

The above-shown tools are for the collection of the dry-leaves-waste. For processing or decomposing this waste environment-friendly bags are used, which are portable and easy for small areas

Environmentally-Friendly Bags: Leaf Bags are used for the decomposition of leaves in an environmentally friendly way. They are made up of cloth and thus they are not durable. Also, these bags are smaller in size and are not feasible for large amounts of dry leaves. Before decomposition, it is necessary to collect the dry leaves and the collection of dry leaves is a problematic factor as it is time-consuming and requires manpower throughout the process.

  • Mulching, Composting (pit, pile, and enclosure composting): Mulching and composting dry leaves is one of the processes that are environmentally friendly but matted leaves create a barrier between air and water which leads to slower decomposition (Admin, 2018).

  • Our focus market is a core growth market because many methods are existing for the collection and processing of dry-leaves-waste. However, the struggle with existing methods is that they are very monotonous and time-consuming. In this project, we aim to overcome this issue.
