This section covers the journey of reaching to the Final Problem Statement and the different stages involved in the process :

1) History - Story behind the Idea or Inspiration

Any successful idea for the product develops when you first understand the problem that needs to be solved. In this section, we discuss the story behind identifying this problem and the underlying issues in the existing solutions of the problem that inspired us to design a product that would try and eliminate these issues to some extent.

2) Reaching the Final Problem Statement

a) Defining the Jobs to be Done

The next step in the process of reaching the Final Problem Statement is defining the Jobs to be done. So, here we first start by identifying the customer base for the product. Once we have established our target market and what the consumers expect from the product, we can move forward to defining how our product will enable various consumers from the customer base to get a job done. Within this, we further define the Main Jobs and the Related Jobs that the customers want to get done, each in turn having other aspects (Functional, Emotional etc.).

b) Identifying the Pain Areas

From the above defined Main Jobs and Related Jobs to be done, we now identify the pain areas that can arise when a specific job is being done by the product. This helps us to design our product in such a way that these pain areas are addressed.

c) Establishing the 5 W’s

Using the 5 W’s techniques helps us understand the problem better. Asking Why, What, Where, When and Who questions about the problem reduces the complexity and clears the basics about the problem statement.

Finally, after implementing all the above mentioned points, we arrive at the Final Problem Statement which clearly and briefly describes the problem our product aims to solve.
