Burning Dry Leaves waste

Burning piles of dry leaves has become a very common site in most Indian cities.
Despite the new Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM), 2016 proposed by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change which specifically prohibits any individual from throwing, burning or burying waste in open public spaces, we find that not only private individuals but also municipal and civic bodies continue the practice of burning dry leaves (Sambyal, 2016).
Even though currently several methods exist for collecting, disposing and processing dry leaves, each one has its pros and cons. The problem lies in the fact that processing of collected dry leaves is not done efficiently. Also, the method of burning leaves is majorly practiced in urban as well as rural areas across the county because it is easy, however it is also responsible for major environmental, health and other problems. Some of these problems include
The society residents face adverse health effects due to regular inhalation of polluted air. When burnt, the moisture trapped in the fallen leaves releases huge amounts of dust, smog and other solid materials which can cause harm in the short term in the form of nausea, headache, irritation in eyes, asthma etc. and long term health effects include lungs, heart and respiratory diseases etc.
Burning of dry leaves releases greenhouse gases which traps the earth’s heat into its atmosphere leading to global warming, climate change etc. Apart from this other forms of toxic substances such as carbon monoxide in higher concentrations can be a source of depletion of oxygen capacity in Red Blood Cells (Nazareth, 2016).
The burning process causes smog effects, which damages human life as well as the biodiversity around the vicinity where the leaves are burnt. This not only affects the health of animals, birds and insects causing carcinogenic issues but also leads to loss of their habitat. Furthermore, burning of dry leaves destroys the nutritional content and the organic matter that should go back to the soil.
Burning of dry leaves can also cause smog and fire related hazards such as traffic accidents, gas pipeline explosions etc.
From the above points, we as the group concluded that this problem falls under the environment domain and we came up with an idea to design a product which aimed at making the process of collection, disposal and processing of dry leaves less tedious and more environmentally friendly.
