Social & Cultural Curriculum
History, Geography & MFL (French)
Social & Cultural Curriculum at North Thoresby Primary Academy
As part of our ‘Remarkable Lives- Discover What’s Possible’ vision, we want our children to know as much as possible about the world around them, both here and beyond and to know that they have a significant role to play in their community and the wider world, both in school and when they grow up and reach adulthood.
We believe our children show curiosity and develop a growing understanding about the past, people and places; so that they can make more informed choices about their own future. Skills that they will be able access in the future will help them to learn new languages or to improve their competence in an existing language. MFL is the development of children’s linguistic competence. It should be seen as a life-long skill. Learning a language opens up avenues of communication and exploration as well as promoting, encouraging and instilling a broader cultural understanding.
Learning is brought to life by a range of enrichment activities which include regular trips and visits to places of historical and geographical interest, including residential experiences to enhance and stimulate learning. We also invite visitors into school and members of our local churches to enrich the learning experience.
Geography
Our aims for Geography:
Our curiosity for the world around us begins at an early age. A high quality, innovative Geography curriculum allows us to understand and explore the ‘what’, the ‘where’ and the ‘how’ of our world; giving us the knowledge we need to understand where, how and why events occur, their impacts on the environment and how they have then influenced people’s lives in the past, the present and the potential future.
Teaching equips children to be inquisitive; think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
Through studying geography, pupils make sense of the world and learn how events from both their own localities and the wider world can impact them directly and indirectly. They develop inclusivity through understanding, describing and appreciating the world whilst also being able to discuss and debate issues on a local, national and global scale.
History
Our aims for History:
A high-quality innovative history curriculum helps children gain coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It inspires pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past.
Teaching equips children to be inquisitive, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement.
Our History curriculum helps children to be fully inclusive by understanding the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
French
Our aims for MFL:
Develop an enthusiastic and positive attitude to other languages and language learning skills
Raise awareness of aspects of their own language and make comparisons with the foreign language, thereby enriching their understanding of both
Become aware that language has a structure, and that this structure differs from one language to another
Become increasingly familiar with the sounds and written form of a modern foreign language; gain enjoyment, pride and a sense of achievement
Use their knowledge with growing confidence and competence to understand what they hear and read, and to express themselves in speech and in writing as well as ask questions
Increase cultural understanding by learning about different countries and their people
Explore and apply strategies to improve their learning
Form a sound basis for further language learning at Key Stage 3 and beyond
