The children at North Ormesby Primary Academy use ICT every day to enhance their learning and because of this, they are the REAL experts! Here are some of the impressive ways that modern technology is integrated into our curriculum...
We have over 250 Apple iPads in school strictly for use by the children, including an iPad Air each from Y2. We have worked very hard for a number of years now to ensure their use brings maximum effectiveness and impact. You can see a video about this here.
We believe in variety being the 'spice of life' for ICT in our school, so iPads are not the only device used. Each class is kitted out with PCs and we have a selection of laptops including Macbook Pros and Macbook Airs.
To help see what the children are doing and to evaluate our own and other's work, we use Apple TV to 'mirror' the screens of individual iPads. This comes in very handy for assessment and for presenting media.
We use an augmented reality called 'Aurasma' right across school to help us bring static content to life! Here's Nicole explaining how it works.
We use a whole host of apps and websites to help enhance the core curriculum - one of these is 'Skoolbo', a great new program to help with reading and maths. The children are immersed in an incredible learning world and are highly motivated by the inbuilt rewards. Earlier this academic year, we were successful in a competition involving schools from the UK and the USA. Denise Lewis called to congratulate us!
We have some very passionate movie creators in our school and the iPads are great for recording their acting, but from a production point of view, 'Animate It' is a super tool for creating stop motion videos using modelling clay/plasticine.
This is 'Cognitoy'. CogniToys are Wi-Fi-connected learning companions for kids ages 5+ that answer questions, play games, spell, tell jokes—and best of all, get smarter over time.
We're very fortunate to have our very own permanent Green Screen! This is a great tool to inspire the children's writing; they can transport themselves to unknown worlds, see important people from the past or enter the worlds of the stories they know.
We love using our iPads to develop oracy - we have special microphones that enhance the recording of sound and we use apps like Keynote to produce presentations to deliver back to the class.
As well as 'augmented' reality, we like to use 'virtual' reality to discover places we really can't visit - like space. We have over 50 VR headsets in school now -these experiences are great for writing!
We like to use ICT to create our own art too! We use apps like Art Set to work with different materials and practise techniques, and we use PhotoShop Touch to produce stunning graphic designs like this work in the style of Andy Warhol.
We realise the impact self and peer assessment can have on learning and we let our technology take it a step further! We use Skitch to take photos of our work then annotate and edit over it. We use storage spaces like Google Drive to hold our work and then print it out to be stuck in books and on displays.
QR codes work in a similar way to Aurasma, linking those with a device to content that we've made and stored on the internet. We use QR codes in books too - in this book, the code will take you to the video of this group delivering their presentation.
Times Tables Rock Stars is another web-based activity that we have signed our children up to. It is a carefully sequenced programme of daily times tables practice. Each week concentrates on a different times table, with a recommended consolidation week for rehearsing the tables that have recently been practiced every third week or so.
The children at North Ormesby Primary Academy are encouraged to use any and all of the technology we have on offer and they love it! Our multi-sensory C-Touch screens mean up to four children at a time can work together!
This is 'Dot' and 'Dash', real robots, charged and ready to play out of the box. They respond to voice, navigate objects, dance, and sing. Using 'Blockly', and other apps you can programme Dot and Dash to create new behaviours, doing more with robotics than ever possible.
This is our Parrot Rolling Spider, an ultra-compact drone controlled by smartphone. It flies indoors and outdoors with surprising speed and stability and is another piece of technology that we can programme using the app 'Tickle'.
Meet Osmo. Osmo is a unique gaming accessory for the iPad that comes with games that challenge the thinking of children in various ways. The attributed apps work on children's spacial awareness, word recognition, spelling, inference and drawing skills, but all content can be customised to suit the needs of the children using Osmo.
