Science
Intent:
At Charles Warren Academy our children are provided with a science curriculum that builds up a body of scientific knowledge (substantive knowledge) alongside the practices of Science (disciplinary knowledge) to help them understand the uses, limitations and implications of science today and in the future. Throughout the science education children learn about the significance of science in society and their own lives and the continued importance of science in solving global problems such as climate change. Our science offer involves exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and questioning. Our aim is that these stimulating and challenging experiences help every child secure and extend their scientific knowledge and vocabulary as well as inspiring them to be scientists of the future.
Implementation:
We use the ARK primary Mastery Programme which has been carefully constructed to support a comprehensive curriculum that will ensure children gain a rich knowledge of the world in which they live, that they encounter experiences to help them make sense of it, and that they build the confidence to make judgements on what they see. Science topics are taught within each year group in accordance with the National Curriculum.
Every year group will build upon the learning from prior year groups therefore developing depth of understanding and progression of skills
Teachers promote enjoyment and foster interest of the scientific disciplines; Biology, Chemistry and Physics
Children explore, question, predict, plan, carry out investigations and observations as well as conclude their findings
Children present their findings and learning using science specific language, observations and diagrams
In order to support children in their ability to ‘know more and remember more’ there are regular opportunities to review the learning taken place in previous topics through use of retrieval quizzes
Children are given key information at the beginning of a topic which includes relevant vocabulary to use as reference
Effective use of education visits and visitors are planned, to enrich and enhance the children’s learning experiences
Impact:
Children will leave our school reaching at least age related expectations for Science. Our science curriculum will lead children to be enthusiastic science learners and understand that science has changed our lives and that it is vital to the world’s future prosperity.
