Sixth formers from across AET academies in England were celebrating Key Stage 5 results on Wednesday and Thursday this week, demonstrating a strong and improved performance across the Trust in a number of key areas.

We are very pleased to announce that the average point score attained for A-levels across AET academies has increased again, this year leaping up to 28.3 (a C grade). In addition, almost 60% of the A level grades awarded to AET students this year are A*-C, with a third at A*-B grades.

Twelve of our sixteen Academies that have sixth forms have improved their average attainment at A-level:

  • Students at Greensward Academy in Hockley had a great year, with 77% gaining a grade A*-C;

  • At Aylward Academy in London, 73% achieved the same high grades;

  • At Richmond Park Academy in London, 72% A*-C and on a continued upward trajectory;

  • On the Isle of Wight, at Sandown Bay Academy 71% of students attained the higher grades and 66% at Ryde Academy;

  • At Felixstowe 68% attained at this standard; and

  • Sir Herbert Leon and Greensward Academies celebrated a 100% pass rate at A Level

In the vocational arena, a number of our sixth form students took the new Tech Levels this year, with some very encouraging results. At Bexleyheath Academy, two students attained the highest Distinction*, while at Hillsview, 100% of students secured a Distinction. Overall, nearly 80% of AET students achieved a Merit or higher across the Trust.

We have also had a good year with our Applied General qualifications, with some astonishing results in some of our academies:

  • Clacton Coastal, where there were 136 entries, over 85% scored a Merit or higher, with over half gaining a Distinction or Distinction*;

  • Bexleyheath, 100% of students passed, with 93% gaining a Merit or higher; and

  • Felixstowe, Greensward, New Rickstones, Ryde, Sandown Bay, Sir Herbert Leon and Tendring Academies all achieved an impressive 100% pass rate.

Julian Drinkall, CEO of AET said:

“These are an encouraging set of results, and I want to congratulate all of our students and staff for their hard work and focus over the last two years. Despite considerable changes to the examination system, they have performed very well indeed, with results that will pave their way to future study or employment.

“The last two years has seen considerable change at AET. We have changed virtually everything about the organisation to focus on ensuring that our academies are delivering an education that provides the foundation for our young people to live remarkable lives. We are starting to see the fruits of that work – our KS2 results have leapt by 19 percentage points over the last two years, and today’s results demonstrate further that the organisation has turned the corner.

“The future is looking very positive, and my congratulations to everyone who is celebrating these results today.”

David Hatchett, AET's National Director of Secondary Schools, said:

“There are some outstanding results this year for AET students and academies across a range of academic and vocational qualifications. It is heartening to see so many of our academies providing a high-quality and improving sixth form education that enables our young people to progress successfully on to the next stages of their lives, whether that is higher education, an apprenticeship, further training or employment.

“I congratulate and pay tribute to our wonderful teachers, leaders and students on this week's results, and wish our Year 13 students all the very best for their future lives.”
