We may have all come on different ships,
but we’re in the same boat now.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Much more than a vague sense of altruism or an abstract feeling of compassion, solidarity gives ethical shape and form to the task of building a better world. Without assuming that our struggles or our hopes for the future are the same, solidarity recognizes the all too real effects of alienation while striving always for common ground because our well-being is bound up with every other human being on our shared planet. Where recognition and alienation are two sides of the same coin, solidarity is that coin’s edge — a mode of existing ethically in a world that is stained by injustice even as it is imbued with hope.
Systems—whether political or food-related—can exert control over individuals and communities. Animal Farm reveals how corrupt leadership can manipulate power to oppress and limit freedoms, while The Omnivore’s Dilemma examines how industrial food systems can shape consumer choices and impact health and the environment.

This unit invites students to explore the physical processes of formation as well as how formative personal and historical experiences shape both individual identities and the broader course of society. By reading Maus, a graphic novel depicting the trauma of the Holocaust, and Uncle Tungsten, a memoir of childhood in World War II Britain, students encounter distinct yet profound experiences shaped by the same global event.

Both of the texts in this unit seek to understand the nature of life, whether it’s through physics, in Seven Brief Lessons on Physics, or through linguistics and communication, in “Story of Your LIfe.” The texts invite readers to ask how knowledge of the universe’s workings can help us, as humans, understand ourselves.

What does it take to survive and thrive, even in the most challenging circumstances? How do living things — whether cells or people — find the strength to push forward? This unit invites students to explore such questions, asking them to examine inner strength in both science and personal narrative and encouraging them to uncover the roots of resilience in all its forms.
