April Fools' Day falls on April 1st. It is known by different cultures and its exact origin is still a mystery. April Fools’ Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to give a hint on the subject of the April Fools’ Day prank. While its exact history is still a mystery, the embrace of April Fools’ Day jokes by the media and major brands has ensured the unofficial holiday’s long life.
Origins of April Fools' Day
The origins are not well defined but some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1.
People who were slow to get the news or failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April fools.” These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.
April Fools’ day in the UK
In England, people play tricks and jokes on their friends. They must do this before 12 noon. If you play a joke after this time, the joke is on you!
Curiosities
In Spain and Spanish-speaking countries, April Fools' Day is celebrated on December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents.
In France,Italy and Belgium the date is known as “April Fish”. The most practiced prank among children is to stick a drawing of a fish on the backs of their classmates.
In Poland, April Fools' Day is taken seriously! Not getting into the mood is practically forbidden during the date.
In Denmark, is celebrated on the 1st of May and is called Maj-Kat.
In Scotland, the tradition has become a two-day event. On the first day, they do a kind of “fool hunt”. The second day is dedicated to the game of sticking paper plates on the backs of colleagues, who usually say "Kick me".

St. Patrick’s Day
Hello, everybody! Our names are Leonor and Mariana. Today we are going to talk about Saint Patrick’s day, celebrated in Ireland. We hope you'll enjoy it!
It falls on March 17, the day when Saint Patrick died; that's why this day is celebrated to honor him. In Ireland this day has been considered a religious holiday for over 1000 years.
Ireland is an island in the northwest Europe, near the Atlantic Ocean. Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Today, people from all backgrounds celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, especially throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore and Russia.
Green is the Irish colour! The green shamrock leaf is the national plant of Ireland and can be found all over the country; that's why the green color stands out even more on this day. Popular St. Patrick’s Day recipes include Irish soda bread, corned beef and cabbage and champ. In the United States, people often wear green on St. Patrick’s Day. They celebrate it with parades and, to highlight this day, people drink green beer and eat green food. Some people visit the green Chicago River in the United States.
One thing that makes it unique is the Leprechauns, tiny creatures dressed in green and who are believed to collect pots of gold. It is said that if you catch a leprechaun, he will lead you to his pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
What impressed us the most about the entire event is the Clover, a three leaf clover, which has been associated with Ireland for centuries and is considered a sacred plant that symbolizes the arrival of spring. According to legend, St. Patrick used the plant as a visual guide.
We hope you understood St Patrick’s day better. May St. Patrick not disappoint you! Good luck!

Halloween
Hello, we are Margarida and João from the 11th B. We love Halloween, therefore we are going to tell you some important things about it. It falls on 31st October all over the world. This festivity started thousands of years ago in Ireland, where the Celts celebrated the end of harvesting and the start of autumn .It was believed that on that day spirits from the dead came back to life. As this was very scary, everyone would dress up as a monster or ghost so spirits wouldn’t recognize them and wouldn’t attack them. For the spirits not to get upset, the Celts placed sweets and candies at the doorsteps for them. As there is no light, pumpkins were used as lanterns. Pumpkins were carved and emptied to be filled with candles, but people could also believe the pumpkins were placed on doorsteps with face shapes to scare the spirits.
Now you know all the origins of Halloween just like us. So go tell everyone why you were in a costume and why you put kreepy pumpkins on your doorstep, GO, GO, GO!!!

Icons:
To celebrate this holiday, there are some icons that can not be missed:
-Fireworks started in Philadelphia in 1977, with13 gun-salutes shot in honor of the 13 former colonies.
-Typical barbecues with family and friends started right after the revolution as public-dinners and nowadays, hot dogs are the most popular food.
-Parades with hundreds of participants that bring joy to the streets with music and different stunts.
-American flags with the famous 50 stars representing the 50 states, 13 stripes, representing the 13 former colonies, and two main colors, red and blue symbolizing perseverance and hardiness.
Curiosities:
1- 150 million hot-dogs are eaten on this day! The Americans really love hot-dogs!
2- The celebrations are all over the country. However, there are some of them peculiar and truly stunning. In New York, during the annual Macy’s Stupendous Fourth of July Firework, gorgeous fireworks are blown up over the Brooklyn Bridge.
3- In Massachusetts , there is the Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch allowing you to watch dolphins and whales and a flaring firework above, all of which during a cruise.
“Give me liberty or give me death!”
This quote was said by Patrick Henry when he spoke at Virginia’s Convention in 1975. This is a meaningful sentence because he would rather die than not be free. We should value our freedom more often than we do. We take freedom as granted, when it is something fragile that could be taken away from us!
