We ask students applying to change into the technical theater pathway to submit a portfolio and essay. This is a way for us to get to know you better, and make sure the tech pathway is a place you'll be productive.
Check out some of our past promotional material on the pathway.
First, create a Google Drive folder titled "[your name] - tech pathway application". Everything you want us to look at goes in there.
For the portfolio, gather any work you've made so far in the areas of theater tech/design, visual art or other handcrafts. It could be from a class at ACT or elsewhere, or done just for fun. Take good quality photos of each work, and add them to that Drive folder. We're especially interested in physical objects (3D or 2D) you've made with your hands, since that's what we do in the sub-basement.
For the essay, please answer the following questions in a Google Doc, in that Drive folder. There's no word count or anything - just answer as completely as you can, in your own authentic voice.
(If you're a current ACT student looking to switch pathways) Why do you want to leave your current pathway?
Why do you want to join the technical theater pathway?
What skills and experiences do you have so far in theater design and tech work (power tools, sewing, crafts, classes, productions, hobbies...)?
Do you have a particular area of interest in the major (costumes, lighting, scenery...) and why?
When everything's ready, share that Drive folder with Colin McNamee and Sarah Murphy. We'll review, try to meet with you to discuss, and sign your form if we agree this is a good fit.
