Virtual Art with Coach Meinert

Who am I and what do we do?

Hey Cougars! My name is Kathryn Meinert. This is my 9th year as the Visual Arts teacher here at AMS. I also coach our champion Cross Country and Track teams. I graduated East Carolina University with an Interior Design degree in 2004 which led me to two years of working in that industry in Atlanta, GA. Then I was ready for a slight (ha!) change, so I moved to Utah and worked with the youth in a wilderness therapy program. A year of that and multiple outdoor jobs (raft guiding and ski/snowboard instructing) later I decided to go back to school for my Masters in Arts Education at Western Carolina University in 2010.

Art in the Middle School takes creative thinking to a whole new level. With each project we go deeper into the history and theology behind the techniques; we explore a variety of mediums (materials), and challenge our creative thinking and problem solving skills to think outside of the box. We will develop and improve upon the following skills: drawing, painting, sculpture, hand eye coordination, and much more. We participate in the Peace Poster contest with the Lions Club of Asheville, the kids issue of the Mountain Xpress, Celebrating Middle School Success at UNCA and other small contests and shows in the community.  My goal is to expose each of my students to several different artists, cultures, materials, techniques, and community involvement to help them become creative problem solving citizens.
