THE WHY
We share a commitment to student success, and we recognize that high-quality early learning experiences provide a powerful foundation for all children to reach their fullest potential. The first eight years of life are a period of incredible growth and development, where young minds rapidly build the structures for lifelong learning.
Early childhood education creates opportunities for children to engage in rich, meaningful learning experiences that set the stage for future success. While each child brings unique strengths and potential, we know that learning environments and instruction must be designed to meet the needs of all students, ensuring that multilingual learners, children from diverse backgrounds, and children with disabilities thrive.
To sustain this momentum, we must provide all children with strong and seamless learning experiences from the start. Advancing P-3 alignment requires a collaborative, comprehensive approach that ensures high-quality, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning across the early years, supporting every child’s ability to flourish.
Research shows that we can produce more equitable outcomes for students through coordination of:
Pre-K-3 standards
Instructional practices and curricula
Asset-based Assessments and Shared Data
Educator Professional Development
P-3 alignment is an intentional approach to supporting children's early education experiences. P-3 alignment promotes quality experiences in education throughout the early years of learning, starting from preschool through 3rd grade. When schools implement strong P-3 alignment, they supports children's lifelong learning.
ACOE is committed to implementing equitable, inclusive, and quality practices to ensure that children’s learning experiences from Pre-K through 3rd grade are developmentally appropriate, cohesive, and integrated across areas of development. We can affect change beginning in preschool to change the trajectory of students’ learning outcomes across the county.
The Alameda County Office of Education is excited to bring together a county-wide P-3 Alignment Network consisting of 16 district teams to align best practices from preschool through third grade in early learning and early elementary instruction and systems.
