Santiago's Goal

At Santiago, all students meet 1:1 with a teacher once every two weeks for at least 10 minutes to check in how they are doing. Together, a mentor and their mentee may focus on the student's academic progress. They set goals in their learning, determine strategies, reflect on successes and setbacks. This time is also used for students to build a connection with a teacher who can help foster crucial habits of success and check on their overall well-being. Students will complete a well-being index four times a year, that will be facilitated by their mentor.

Managing Your Mentor Schedule

School is off to a great start! All of our teachers are working closely with their co-teaching teams, social worker, and speech pathologist to meet Santiago's mentoring goal. In the event that teacher schedules do not allow 1:1 mentoring for ten minutes for each student biweekly, teachers can use the following strategies while we adjust schedules to meet our goal.

Use the WBI data, and our SEL MTSS tiers to prioritize students to receive 1:1 biweekly mentoring for a full 10 minutes.

Prioritize meeting with all students over completing the full ten minutes. 5-minute check-ins can still be extremely powerful and will helt teachers determine who may need additional time.

Prioritize meeting with all students over completing mentoring in a 1:1 setting. Some students may be able to meet in small groups for their mentor check-in. This will help build peer relationships in addition to ensuring all students have an intentional check-in on a regular basis.

Turnaround for Children's Well-Being Index

Tools, resources, guides, and templates to support administering, reviewing and reflection on student's well-being can be found in the Well-Being Index folder on Google Drive.

Santiago teachers collect holistic student data on each student's physical, social, psychological and emotional well-being using Turnaround for Children's Well-Being Index.  Each teacher will administer, review and reflect on student's Well-Being four times in a school year.

The first Well-Being check takes place within the first six weeks of the school year. The second and third check before student-led conferences in late November and the middle of May. The final check will take place within the last six weeks of the school year.

Co-teaching teams will review data from the lens of each student and each class, reflecting and making a plan to address and trends they see throughout their class.

Most importantly, all data is shared and reviewed with students and their families. Santiago students are in charge of their own learning, especially around their overall well-being, and will be given tools to support their growth.
