Music is all around us. Birds sing, dryers hum, the wind whistles, the universe vibrates. The sun and moon keep time. And human beings join in with their own songs and rhythms, timbres and harmonies. It usually begins with singing.
Singing and talking, laughing and crying, exclaiming and whispering: all these sounds we make with our voices to express and communicate. We breathe in and discover we've inhaled energy. When we exhale with purpose and power and sound, we sing. We heighten and express our feelings. When we combine them with words, we deepen our thoughts and share our ideas, our experiences, our selves.
Exploring. Human beings are driven to explore their world, their oceans, mountains, solar system, their minds and experiences, beliefs and feelings. We explore alone or together, but never in isolation. We use the findings of others to find new vistas. And in music, we spend time together and alone to discover our voices and the music others have created that use our voices to explore the ideas and experiences of others.
