The Troop Carrier
"ABANDON SHIP!" Yelled the crew as the waves splashed up the side of the boat. "Mother look! A ship!" I cried as the next wave splashed over the side. Just around a minute after you could hear the yells and screams of realization inside the ship, it was horrifying. People were scrambling to shore, they looked like American troops. "Mother! We have to go help them, they're troops!"
During WWI Islay lost over 200 men. This loss, led to many family's to go into mourning.
In 1918, the SS Tuscania (troop carrier), was carrying American soilders from New Jersey to Liverpool. Unexpectedly, an German submarine torpedoed the Tuscania off the coast of Islay; leading the ship to sink. This tragedy, sadly took 200 men's lives.
Fun Fact! During WWI a small group of Islanders crafted together an American flag forthe funerals of the victims, which eventually was gifted to US president Woodrow Wilson. The flag was been preserved for over 100 years.
The HMS Otranto, collided with an other ship; the HMS Kashmir. This caused 470 troops to be drowned off the shores of Islay.
