The Ticket
Slowly, I awakened from my sleep. Movement by movement I made my way out of bed to light the small, burnt out candle that I had been using for months. Sadly, that was all we could afford. Being so poor made it hard for us to live. The urge to eat was one of the only things that would keep me awake. Most mornings I would leave to get water, but today it was different.
"ANNE! ANNE!" Yelled Mama at the top of her lungs, "A TICKET, A TICKET!!" Confused, the whole family looked at her as if she was a cycling on a one wheeled bicycle. " I'm sorry, what?" Asked Father, " Oh! Dear, Mr. Ramsay has left us all tickets to Canada!" We all gasped. That same day we would be on a boat to Canada, not knowing were are lives would lead to next....
The Clearances in Scotland lasted from 1750-1860, this tragic period caused many people to flee. As eviction notices got put up, more children and families had to leave their homes. More and more people started to flee to the ; US, Australia, Canada and other countries to make a new life.
Fun Fact!: Ramsay (the same man who built the Ramsey Hall in Port Ellen) helped many civilians escape the crisis of the clearances by sending them away by boat to Canada. This was to make a new life in another country, hundreds and hundreds of miles away from home. Mr Ramsay cared about his tenants so much he visited them all in Canada to see how they had settled in.
