Irelands View
"Sir, is this the place you would like to visit?" Asked a man in robes. "Yes," answered St. Columba. Slowly, St. Columba gracefully climbed out of the boat and onto the dry sand. "Let us head to the houses" said Columba calmly. As they came closer towards the village the more interested I got, who was St. Columba? I followed the men for around a mile until we reached the shoreline of the village, "No, I can see Ireland." said St. Columba. I was startled, what was wrong with ireland?
Christianity came to islay approximately after 500 AD, leaving mesmerising carved stone crosses and wonderful churches. St. Columba's missionaries built many sites on Islay calling them Chapels. They all started with Cill or Kil, and a lot are still noticed today; Kilchoman, Kilnave, Kilchiaran, Kildalton and Kilmeny. These are only a few examples.
Fun Fact!: Apparently St. Columba visited Islay on his journey north. But he settled in Iona as he did not want to see Ireland from his home.
Kildalton Cross was built with Iona influences. It would have been built in the 700s as a tradition to help preists preach in the Christian Faith.
