The Battle of Traigh Ghruinneart was held on the 5th of August 1598, this battle was between the MacDonald's and the McLean's and took place on the sands of Loch Gruinart.  At the time, the MacDonald's ruled over Islay.  These two leaders were found to be related, they were uncle and nephew. But, the Uncle did not care about family. As so, he landed on Islay. He wanted to kill his nephew. The MacDonald's had fewer men, but they had better training. In result, the MacDonald's claimed victory. Some of the McLean's escaped by boat, other were trapped in Kilnave Church. Sadly, the church  was burned by the Macdonald's.  A dwarf named Dubh Sith was hidden in a bush, killed Mclean with an arrow after he had taken off his helmet. There is a cairn to visit to see the place where McLean was murdered.
