Skills for life and learning are integral to all aspects of school life and are embedded into all of our lessons, activities and events. Over the last three years our learners have explored the meta skills programme to develop understanding of specific skills and how they help us with life, learning and work.

We also provide Life Skills learning to help develop our independence and build our confidence managing life experiences without help.
Our Golden Book theme is often based on meta skills to help us to see how we are showing success in skills across the school.
In activity days and house challenges, we often have a meta skills theme also. This helps us to work with people from other classes and year groups to develop our meta skills.
Please see below for a few examples of some of the projects we have run in school!
Through the bike bus we learn the skill of cycling, build our confidence cycling on the road, develop our understanding of road safety, learn healthy habits and also help to make our community safer for all road users.
Through the bike mechanics business, we are learning how to use different tools, how to solve problems, how to work as part of a team and how to fix broken things rather than buy new things.
Through Wheely Wednesday's we get the chance to develop our confidence on bikes, scooters, roller blades and skateboards in a safe environment. We are learning healthy habits and work to support each other.
Through the weekly tuck shop, we raise funds for school resources, plus learn how to organise and manage stock and apply our maths skills to calculating costs and giving change. We also learn about how to price items based on their cost so that they make a profit.
We run many enterprise projects and we learn skills such as marketing, organisation, accounting, sales and collaborating. We plan and adjust after each event to take into account feedback from our customers.
Some of our learners have set up and organised their own profitable crochet business. They also offer clothing repairs. Mr McMullan says "Fuzzy wonders fixed my ripped trousers for £3 and saved me buying new ones". Mr McMullan's Wife says "I love the crochet scrunchy I was bought. I use it all the time when I am running".
We work together to support each other to learn to tie our shoe laces. This gives us a sense of confidence and helps us to organise ourselves throughout the day without adult help.
Through the cafe, we develop community links, communication skills, organisation skills and get to role play real life situations.
Learning how to use tools gives us the confidence to fix things in our houses without having to pay someone or ask for help. It also helps us learn knowledge that could help us get a career after we leave school.
Through the car valet project we learned about different cleaning tools, how to properly wash and clean (exceptionally dirty) cars including pet hair and old crusty food. We also learned how to use customer service skills to make sure the customer was happy with the level of service and recommended us to others.

We love this style of learning and it gives us the confidence to take on challenges in our lives independently.
We provide lots of opportunities to apply the learning from our lessons to real life situations. This helps us to understand why we are learning what we are learning and how it is useful for us as we grow up. It also builds our confidence and independence as well as our understanding of how the world works!
