Elanor Rodeffer - Curatorial Rationale

It’s been a pleasure working on these pieces for you guys to see! If you couldn’t tell, my theme for this collective has to do with the emotions someone can feel. Even though many emotions aren’t featured here, I hope that you can appreciate and relate to the ones you do see. Some emotions are considered warm and good; such as happiness, gratitude, and all the different kinds of love the ancient Greeks had words for. Some emotions are looked down on; including anxiety, sadness, anger, and more. There are also emotions that aren’t really thought of as good or bad; like nostalgia, tiredness, or dissociation. Something I’ve realised, for a while now, is that many people focus on whenever things go wrong; when you feel an emotion you don’t like. It’s just how most of our brains are wired: if things are good, then no worries! If something goes wrong, it deserves our attention to fix it. I digress, but want you to remember that joy exists, even when you’re not paying attention to it.

Wow, anyways. My intention with all this was to let you interpret and relate to each piece the way you desire, because everyone is unique in the way they experience things, especially due to their past experiences. Enjoy the art as you will.

Slipping (December 2019)

Board, gesso, acrylic paints

Size: 10x28

This painting represents the feeling of when you’re kind of enveloped and falling (or “slipping”) into a dissociative and numb state. Things are falling apart but it’s not loud, just a sort of decaying dead with a quiet encroaching gloop of hazy fog.

How It Used To Be (March 2021)

Watercolor paper, colored pencils, graphite pencil, crayons, colorful permanent markers, black sharpie, glitter pen, watercolor paints, sketchbook paper, white paint pen

Size: 12x9

Childhood for the most part is rather colorful, isn’t it? This illustration features the emotion nostalgia; I suppose that’s all there is needed to be said. Using different mediums for this art was fun, and I think it contributed well to the whole ‘childhood’ aspect of it all. I definitely needed to use crayons, and I did.

Lost (November 2020)

Old & newish road maps, paper folder, a reflective shiny packaging material, glue, white, grey, & black pastels, white & black pencils, black sharpie

Size: 8.8x11x0.3

Alternate name: Overwhelmed. This mixed media project was slightly inspired by ‘glitchcore aesthetic’, but all in all the piece represents those times when you’re overwhelmed, splitting apart with everything crashing down around and within you, leaving you lost in the insanity and darkness during the span of time in which the emotion takes place.

Happy Day! (March 2021)

Digitally made in Ibis Paint X

Size: 10x10

Happy warm colors and joy! Very sunny. This piece expresses happiness, and I feel like yellows and oranges are happy colors. It’s a good emotion.

One, Two, Three, Four (March 2021)

Sketchbook paper, colorful permanent markers, black white board marker

Size: 7x10

I’ll leave this one up for interpretation. Some could say it’s a story, another could say it’s collected emotions in one, and someone could come up with an entirely different theory. Everyone is unique in how they experience their senses, including emotion. This piece was inspired by pop art, though it also reminds me of those emote cards people sometimes use. This concludes my gallery.
