Grants:
Free money from schools or the government, based on financial need (you'll need to fill out a FAFSA or CSS Profile). You do NOT have to pay grants back.
Scholarships:
Free money from schools or independent providers, usually based on eligibility requirements and an application. You do NOT have to repay scholarships.
Loans:
Loans provide you with money to pay for college (which can include non-tuition expenses), but you have to pay them back after you graduate, with interest.
Government loans generally have lower interest rates.
Private loans are generally more expensive than government loans.
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for financial aid for college. Submitting the FAFSA is the first step to getting federal grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities and student loans. It also helps determine eligibility for most state aid programs, like the Michigan Achievement Scholarship!
The FAFSA is open for the 2026-2027 school year!
