STEM in Society
The STEM in Society classroom promotes 21st Century skills. These are skills that today’s students will need to succeed in their future careers.
21st Century skills:
Critical thinking is all about solving problems.
Creativity teaches students to think outside the box.
Collaboration shows students how to work together to achieve a common goal.
Communication lets students learn how to best convey their ideas to an audience.

Students in grades PK-2 are using their creativity to be a maker. Students will explore what creativity means to them as they design and create an item of their choosing. The final products will be shared in a maker fair. Use the navigation section at the top of this page to see more.
Students in grades 3-5 are designing a specific chair to meet the needs of a client. Students will be exploring chair possibilities, empathy maps for clients, and scrappy prototypes. Use the navigation section at the top of this page to see more.
Students in grades K-2 were asked to investigate the function of various types of hats. Students collaborated in groups to then design a new type of hat. Using this design, students used recyclable materials to construct a prototype of their design. Click above to see pictures of each hat prototype. You can also use the navigation section at the top of this page.
Students in grades 3-5 were asked to investigate the function of various types of backpacks. Students researched different regions of the world. Next, they collaborated with a peer group to design a backpack for a specific client in a particular region of the world. Using this design, students used recyclable materials to construct a prototype of their backpack design. Click above to see pictures of each backpack prototype. You can also use the navigation section at the top of this page.
