Our Mission
Why we are here:
The Department of Special Education's mission is to prepare each child from birth through 21 to contribute to their communities in meaningful and positive ways, by providing specialized instruction, allowing for individual differences and learning styles and developing independence.
These courses are designed to meet the Individualized Education Program (IEP) needs of students with disabilities and provide specialized instruction and real-life experiences to prepare students with significant disabilities for life beyond high school. These courses utilize a variety of strategies and instructional methods to provide students with specialized instruction in English, science, social studies, mathematics, and vocational programs.
Direct, intensive, and/or multi-sensory instruction utilizing specialized instructional strategies and the alternate curriculum framework provided in a small group, self-contained environment.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools recognizes the individual needs of students. The continuum includes specialty programs (Autism, Emotional Disabilities, and Alternative Curriculum Classrooms). Specialty program decisions are IEP Team determined and based on the student’s accommodations/modifications, supplemental aids, and service requirements. They are co-located in comprehensive schools throughout the county.
Direct instruction within the least restrictive environment of the general education classroom through TEAM teaching, and collaborative instructional models.
Direct support for individual students by the special education teacher or instructional assistant by making adaptations or modifications to the general education curriculum and assessments.
Direct intensive or multi-sensory instruction utilizing specialized strategies and techniques in a small group, self-contained environment with an alternative curriculum when necessary.
The Peer Buddy program is designed to increase access to general education curriculum and inclusion in school activities by students with disabilities. General education students provide social and academic support to their classmates with disabilities by (a) helping them acquire skills needed to succeed in the general education environment and (b) adapting the environment to be more welcoming and accommodating to individual differences and needs.
Best Buddies International is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Special Olympics is dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
