What is the Middle Years Programme?
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16 (typically grades 6–10). The MYP is a challenging and flexible educational framework that encourages students to make meaningful connections between their studies and the real world. The programme focuses on developing the whole student - intellectually, socially, emotionally, and ethically, while building a strong foundation for future success in the IB Diploma Programme (DP), the Career-related Programme (CP), and beyond.
The MYP prepares students to:
Develop critical and creative thinking skills
Make connections between classroom learning and real-world issues
Build confidence in managing their own learning
Engage with global challenges and multiple perspectives
Strengthen communication, collaboration, and research skills
Grow as reflective, open-minded, and internationally minded learners
The MYP empowers students to become active learners who are prepared to take on meaningful challenges in school and in life.
The Curriculum
The MYP provides a broad and balanced education through eight subject groups:
Language and Literature
Language Acquisition
Individuals and Societies
Sciences
Mathematics
Arts
Physical and Health Education
Students study each subject group throughout the programme, ensuring a well-rounded academic experience. In the later years, schools may provide some flexibility to allow students to focus on their interests and goals.
Key Features of the MYP
The MYP is unique in its emphasis on connecting learning across disciplines and applying knowledge in meaningful ways:
Interdisciplinary Learning: Students integrate knowledge from multiple subjects to explore complex, real-world problems and develop deeper understanding
Global Contexts: Learning is framed through global themes that help students understand their place in the world and their responsibility as global citizens
Approaches to Learning (ATL): Students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, research, and self-management
Service as Action: Students apply their learning through meaningful service and community engagement
MYP Projects
Students complete significant, long-term projects that promote independence and personal growth:
Community Project: A collaborative or individual project focused on service and community involvement
Personal Project: An independent, in-depth exploration of a topic of personal interest completed in the final year
The Personal Project allows students to demonstrate research, creativity, and reflection while developing skills that will prepare them for future academic work.
Assessment
Student learning in the MYP is evaluated through a combination of coursework, projects, and optional external assessments. In the final year, students may participate in IB eAssessments, which can lead to IB-validated results and the MYP Certificate.
AHS and The IB Middle Years Programme
The MYP provides a strong foundation for academic success by helping students develop the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed for future learning. Through its focus on inquiry, global awareness, and real-world application, the MYP prepares students to succeed in the IB Diploma Programme, college, and an increasingly interconnected world. Which we connect through all content here at Annapolis High School.
