What is the Extended Essay?
The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) that all students must complete. It is an independent, self-directed research project that allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth.
Through the EE, students engage in a structured process of inquiry, culminating in a formal academic paper of up to 4,000 words. This experience prepares students for the expectations of university-level research, academic writing, and independent study.
The Extended Essay prepares students to:
Conduct independent, in-depth research on a topic of interest
Develop advanced critical thinking and analytical skills
Strengthen academic writing and argumentation
Learn effective time management and organizational strategies
Engage in intellectual exploration beyond the classroom
Build confidence in presenting and defending ideas
The EE encourages students to become self-motivated learners who take ownership of their academic growth.
The EE Experience
Students select a subject area and research question that aligns with their interests and academic goals. Over time, they:
Investigate a focused research question
Gather and evaluate sources
Analyze evidence and develop an argument
Reflect on their research process and learning
Students are supported by a faculty supervisor who provides guidance throughout the process, helping them refine their topic and develop strong research skills.
Reflection and Process
A key component of the Extended Essay is reflection. Students regularly reflect on their progress, challenges, and learning as they move through the research and writing process.
This reflective approach helps students:
Understand their strengths and areas for growth
Develop resilience and perseverance
Improve their ability to think metacognitively about their work
Assessment
The Extended Essay is externally assessed by IB examiners based on criteria such as:
Focus and method
Knowledge and understanding
Critical thinking
Presentation
Engagement through reflection
In combination with Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the EE can contribute up to three additional points toward a student’s overall IB Diploma score.
Why is the Extended Essay important?
The Extended Essay is a cornerstone of the IB experience because it prepares students for the academic demands of college and beyond. It allows students to explore their passions, develop independence, and build skills that are highly valued by universities. Through the EE, students gain the ability to think critically, research effectively, and communicate ideas clearly, skills that will support success in higher education, careers, and lifelong learning.
