What is CAS?
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is one of the three core components of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) that all students must complete. CAS is designed to complement academic studies by engaging students in meaningful experiences beyond the classroom throughout their IB journey.
Rather than focusing on exams or grades, CAS emphasizes learning through experience, encouraging students to explore their interests, develop new skills, and grow as individuals. Through CAS, students build a deeper understanding of themselves and their role within their community and the world.
The CAS experience prepares students to:
Develop personal and interpersonal skills through real-world experiences
Become more self-aware, reflective, and goal-oriented
Strengthen collaboration, communication, and leadership abilities
Explore interests and passions beyond the classroom
Make meaningful contributions to their communities
Build resilience, independence, and confidence
CAS provides a valuable balance to the academic rigor of the Diploma Programme while fostering growth in all areas of student development.
The CAS Framework
CAS is organized into three interconnected strands:
Creativity: Experiences that involve creative thinking, expression, and innovation, including the arts and other imaginative pursuits
Activity: Physical activities that contribute to a healthy and active lifestyle, complementing academic work
Service: Volunteer and community-based experiences that promote social responsibility and meaningful engagement with others
Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of experiences across all three strands, often integrating them into projects and long-term activities.
CAS Projects and Experiences
As part of CAS, students complete a range of experiences and at least one CAS project, which requires sustained involvement and collaboration. These projects are designed to:
Challenge students to show initiative and perseverance
Develop problem-solving and decision-making skills
Encourage teamwork and leadership
Provide opportunities for meaningful impact within the community
Each student’s CAS journey is unique and personalized, reflecting their interests, goals, and passions.
Assessment and Reflection
CAS is not graded using traditional marks or exam scores. Instead, students demonstrate completion by actively participating in CAS experiences and reflecting on their growth over time.
Students document their learning through reflections that highlight:
Skills developed
Challenges faced
Personal growth and self-awareness
Connections to the IB learner profile
Successful completion of CAS is a requirement for earning the IB Diploma.
Why is CAS important?
CAS is a cornerstone of the IB experience because it connects academic learning to real-world action. It empowers students to step outside the classroom, engage with their communities, and develop as compassionate, active, and globally minded individuals. Through CAS, students gain the confidence, skills, and mindset needed to succeed in college, careers, and life, while making a positive difference in the world around them.
