Implementation Strategy: The use of highlighters is a valuable tool for all learners, but might especially enhance comprehension, analysis, and retention of information for those who struggle with the use of singular instructional methodology. Students can use highlighters to categorize information, identify key details, and determine intent of a passage (e.g., compare and contrast, cause and effect, character and plot analysis). Once the text is highlighted the students can extract the information using the collect highlights features. This creates a google document where students can summarize in their own words and analyze text based on highlighted concepts or details.
Use the highlighter tools to make important words or phrases more salient. For example, if working on teaching rhyming words, provide the students a poem and have them use text to speech to read the poem. Use the highlighter tools to mark the rhyming words. Highlight all the words that rhyme with each other with the same color.
*When working within Google Slides the collect highlights feature is not available. Please consider providing all students with a PDF copy of the slides. This will allow students to highlight and export those highlights to a new Google Doc. Please see video below for how to convert slides to PDF and how to use the PDF Reader extension.
