Tools for Engagement within PDFs

These tools allow students to access the UDL tools offered within the Read&Write toolbar while working on a PDF document.

Implementation Strategy: Teacher can allow students the time they need to learn how to use the tools offered within the Read&Write toolbar and Read&Write PDF reader toolbar to increase their engagement in using this powerful extension. To increase student engagement when completing academic work, teachers should encourage students to explore and access the tools they need to successfully understand content. For some students, that may be utilizing text to speech to listen to content rather than read it. For other students that may mean allowing students to use the Talk&Type feature for speech-to-text rather than using a keyboard to type. Some students may better engage in academic content when they have access to a Dictionary or Picture Dictionary to help increase their understanding of vocabulary words. A student's toolbar can be customized if they require a more personalized experience when using Read&Write to engage in content. Allow students to choose their form of expressing their ideas, whether that is through typing or using freehand tools. The Push-Pin tool can be used in a variety of ways that enhance student's abilities to collaborate with their peers or teachers. The Push-Pin tool can also be used to provide students with opportunities to self-reflect on their work or answer guided questions to process through their thinking.
