GCC TEACHERS

The purpose of the Global Community Citizenship course is to explore the values and diversity of our local, national, and global communities. Through real world occurrences and issues, teachers guide students to identify and discuss topics, events, and essential questions relevant to their local community which allow them to understand their personal role in demonstrating civic virtues. Students consider the cultural, historical, and technological influences that have shaped our modern society and consider how these impact students’ lives now and into the future. Students begin with self-exploration to understand what events, traditions, and circumstances have shaped their views, behaviors, and goals. This is followed by the exploration of traditions of people in our local and global communities, with a goal of fostering values of acceptance and inclusion of all people. Active listening and social discourse (conversation) skills will be explicitly taught and practiced during this course.

Michelle Bland

Michelle Bland, Studio 39 Production Manager, has been working in theatre and education professionally for over 20 years. Since starting her career in production management at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, she has been committed to creating collaborative environments and providing project management resources for all artists. She has master’s degree in Theatre education from Catholic University and has presented both regionally and nationally for American Alliance for Theatre and Education.

Lawrence Suh

Lawrence Suh, is a Music Composition graduate of Carnegie Mellon University (M.M) and Oberlin Conservatory (B.M). He was the recipient of the 2019 Gindroz Prize, the 2013 ASCAP Morton Gould Award, and the 2012 Irving Caesar Award. His orchestral composition Last Threads of an Eternal Summer was the student piece selected to be premiered by the Oberlin Orchestra in 2016. Lawrence has written for a variety of ensembles, including orchestra, choir, marching band and string quartet. He believes in the importance of education and the promotion of music among younger generations.

Dr. Yesook Suh

Yesook L. Suh is a graduate of Boston University (B.M. in Piano and Composition), Johns Hopkins University’s Peabody Conservatory of Music (M.M. in Computer Music), and the University of Maryland, College Park (D.M.A. in Composition). She currently teaches Piano, Composition, and Music History for the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Performing and Visual Arts Magnet Program (AACPS/PVA).

Dr. Suh is also the Director of the Gifted and Talented Music Program of the Kirov Academy in Washington, DC and serves as the Co-Chair for the 2020 Kirov International Junior E-Piano Competition and annual Kirov International Music Festival. Prior to working at the Broadneck High School in Annapolis, MD, Dr. Suh taught Music Theory as an Adjunct Professor at Goucher College, at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Towson University. She was also the Chair of the Thomas Benjamin Young Composers Competition and taught composition at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Young Composers Workshop.

As a Korean-American composer, Dr. Suh has received many awards for her compositions, including First Place in the Prix d’Été Competition, the Walsum Composition Award, and the International Society of American Music Composer Award. She has received numerous commissions, including requests for her musical compositions from the Maryland Opera Studio, the Russian Chamber Arts Society and the Korean Cultural Foundation.
