Yanshui Elementary School's Digital Technology "Tech Bees" participated in the 2022 Taiwan Science and Technology Education Exhibition, astonishing the visitors and receiving recognition from the Ministry of Education. On December 3rd, during the 125th anniversary celebration of the school, the Digital Technology "Bee Cannon City" will be showcased, inviting intellectuals from all walks of life to visit and experience it.
Principal Wang Huizu stated that the teachers and students of Yanshui Elementary School combined art and technology by using Micro:bit and Arduino from Wistron to simulate the fireworks launched by the bee cannon, creating the visual effects of the fireworks. They also used the built-in GarageBand on iPads to create electronic music with elements of the temple procession. The learning process of observation and discussion by the children was recorded using Jamboard, and they shared their experiences with a primary school in Malaysia through Padlet and video communication.
One visiting graduate student from Hong Kong, accompanied by a Russian friend, highly appreciated the integration of the five senses experience into the technology by the design team. The students using rubber bands to simulate the power of launching the bee cannon were indeed cute, yet a bit frightening.
Yanshuei Elementary School is located in Yanshui District, Tainan City. Looking back at the development history of Yanshuei , it has a history of over 300 years, with abundant cultural assets and old houses and streets that can be seen everywhere, presenting a rich cultural appearance. The most famous attraction is the firecrackers during the Lantern Festival, which attracts tens of thousands of people every year to experience the carnival of thousands of firecrackers, turning the entire district into a bustling city that never sleeps. During the Qing Dynasty, there was a saying, "One in the capital, two in Lukang, three in Monga, and four in Yuejin." Yuejin was the ancient name of Yanshuei . Yanshuei Port was a prosperous commercial port with bustling commercial ships and boats, thriving economy, and prosperous people's lives. It also contributed to the rich local culture and flourishing literary atmosphere of Yanshuei , as reflected in the local saying, "There are more scholars with hats in Yanshuei than weighing pans in Puzi."
Furthermore, Yanshuei has charming scenery and "Moonjin's Eight Scenic Spots" that attract literati to gather and compose poetry. Continuing this literary style, a group of intellectuals formed the "Moonjin Poetry Society" during the Japanese colonial period, dedicated to preserving Chinese culture. Yanshuei 's cultural development has been influenced by early commercial activities and the farming practices of "looking at the sky and cultivating the land" in the southern region, combining urban and rural colors in local arts and cultural activities, such as firecrackers, narcissus flowers, cultural events, herbal medicine, and cricket fighting.
Yanshuei Elementary School, with a history of over 125 years, is one of the oldest schools in Tainan City. Its predecessor was the Yanshuei Port Public School during the Japanese colonial period. The funds for establishing the public school were obtained by selling and transferring the land owned by the Kwibi Academy mentioned above. From Kwibi Academy to the public school and then to Yanshuei Elementary School, it symbolizes the continuity of education. In the long river of history, we can see the changes of Yanshuei Elementary School. History is the school's asset, and culture is its breadth of vision.
Yanshuei is known for its "Yanshuei Trio" – firecrackers, narcissus carvings, and Yi Mian (duck egg noodles). With the implementation of the 12-year national curriculum guidelines, Yanshuei Elementary School, which shoulders the responsibility of cultural heritage, strives to create a joyful learning environment for students and convey local sentiments. It designs and develops the "Exploring Yanshuei " curriculum materials that integrate local culture with community collaboration. This allows students to experience the beauty of their hometown's culture and landscapes, aiming to transmit local sentiments and establish a connection with the land. This reflects the teachers' local attachment and educational enthusiasm.
As an old school with a history of over a hundred years, Yanshuei Elementary School, like the old trees on its campus, continues to flourish. Through the efforts of principals, teachers, parents, and community members, the school exhibits curriculum vitality and innovation. In recent years, it has incorporated the vision of International Education 2.0, "Connecting Internationally, Linking Globally," into its curriculum. It implements digital deep learning education through interdisciplinary thematic teaching, integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The campus is bilingual, with an international cultural learning corridor, foreign teachers, and enhanced bilingual teaching capabilities for the faculty. Inquiry-based learning is implemented in the school's gifted program, and students and teachers have achieved numerous awards in science exhibitions and independent research competitions. Health promotion activities promote students' active and diverse learning, while various clubs enrich their abilities. After-school care services provide peace of mind for parents, and collaborative learning assistance is provided. The curriculum and teaching uphold the principles of "fostering excellence, assisting the weak, and supporting the average," with teachers and students working together with care, meticulousness, and patience, ensuring that every child at Yanshuei Elementary School is precious.
Infrastructure development has also been continuous. In line with the national energy policy, solar panels have been installed on classroom roofs, and the tennis court has been transformed into a solar-powered covered court. The central kitchen equipment has been extensively renovated, waterproofing work has been done on the kindergarten rooftop, and new children's play equipment has been installed on the school playground.
Yanshuei Elementary School has a history of 125 years. Just like in the movie "Cape No. 7," where Ma La-sang raises a glass of millet wine and shouts, "A thousand years of tradition, a whole new experience," the old school continues to be revitalized through the support of principals, alumni, teachers, students, and community members. It constantly demonstrates vitality and innovation as a school.
