Guidance Program
The guidance program is a comprehensive K-12 developmental program. Because we feel it is important to get to know the students beginning early in their freshman year, freshmen are scheduled to meet with the counselors in small groups (five to six) after the first quarter to talk about their transition from eighth grade to high school. During these meetings, freshmen receive an overview of their four years with a focus on creating a transcript that will allow them to have options for when they graduate.
Sophomores are scheduled in small groups during the second half of the spring semester. Career interest inventories, regarding career decision making, are completed by sophomores using a computer program which allows them to develop a portfolio. This portfolio contains college and career information.
Juniors are scheduled for individual meetings starting in January. Continued college research is conducted, as students are gathering information based on criteria they feel is important in selecting a school. Classes for the following year are also discussed at this time.
Seniors are scheduled individually in the fall as a continuation of their junior meeting. At this time, students begin to finalize their post-secondary plans and review the application process (see The College Search Process).
Parents are also invited to schedule appointments with counselors and/or teachers to ensure that each student has the opportunity to achieve academic and personal success while at Yarmouth High School. It is only by working together that we can best help the student to reach his/her greatest potential. To help in college or other post-secondary planning, the guidance department conducts small group meetings, individual sessions, and parent workshops throughout the year.
