Scheduling a Campus Visit
Tips
Access college websites for schedule information on tours and group information sessions.
See Appendix for A Checklist for a Campus Visit.
Great times to visit campuses are early spring of a student's junior year or early fall of their senior year.
When visiting, scope out classes, eat in the cafeteria, look at a dorm room, drop in and visit the library. Plan to spend 2-3 hours on the campus.
Another opportunity to become familiar with different schools is to attend an information session with the many college admissions representatives who visit Yarmouth High School in the fall. Please check the Guidance website for a comprehensive list of colleges visiting YHS. Participating in an information session is a great opportunity to make a personal connection with an admissions representative who is more than likely going to read your application.
Questions for your tour guide
“Why did you choose to attend this school?”
“If you could change one thing about this school, what would it be?”
“What surprised you about this school when you first arrived as a student?”
“Where is your favorite place to study?”
After the visit
Write down your impressions of the college. Create a pros and cons list for each school you visit. Also, you can refer to the College Comparison Worksheet in the Appendix.
Send a thank you note if you met with an admissions officer individually.
Remember: This is the time to see if the college is the right one for you. Be more concerned about fit than whether or not you will be accepted.
