The Interview
Purpose
The interview is an opportunity to express who you are and what you are looking for in a college. It is also a great time to share what you can bring to the college community.
Tips
Dress and act appropriately. Do not wear blue jeans or t-shirts.
Be on time.
Read the catalogue, viewbook, and website ahead of time.
Prepare some questions (ask questions that are not easily answered in the viewbook. i.e. “How many students attend College A?”).
Be yourself and don’t answer questions based on what you think they want to hear. The interviewer needs to get to know you.
Be honest and take it seriously.
Know your academic record and be prepared to talk about it, especially if your transcript needs some explaining.
Don’t make excuses. Admissions officers know adolescents make mistakes; what they want to know is what you’ve learned from it and done about it.
After the Interview
Get the name of the interviewer and write a thank you note expressing your gratitude for the meeting and taking the time to have a meaningful conversation.
Sign up for the Practice Interviews sponsored by the Yarmouth High School Guidance Department in mid-March. You will interview with a College Admissions representative who will complete a written evaluation to help you as you prepare for your official college interviews. An Interview Skills Workshop will be provided prior to your practice interview.
