German Expressionist Prints

Kommen flatternde Vogel, print by Hannah Hoch, 1915, (n.d.) Spaightwoodgalleries.com

Bildnis Eugene George / The Occultist, print by Ludwig Meidner, 1920,

The two images above are similar in the style and distinctive mark making. The two artists differ in subject matter greatly, the print by Hannah Hoch is abstract and uses unity in the structure shapes and well defined lines to create the image. Ludwig Meidner’s print of the man is realistic with a twist of abstraction. The subjects features are exaggerated and incorrectly proportioned. The patterns and rhythm within Meidner’s print is similar to Hoch’s. Lines within both Hoch and Meidner prints are expressive and contrast to softer edges and negative space left by the ink.
