Problem Solving
Along with communication, connections, and real world application, problem solving is one of the main focuses of NCTM, The National Council of Teachers in Mathematics and the Common Core. Through POW's students will be able to blend and develop many of these skills.
Typical POW schedule:
Maroon represents the day the new POW is handed out.
Blue represents the due date.
POW's will be given every other week and are to be done at home or in school, but are not a part of regular class time. Students may work with a friend or someone else. I encourage students to use the first weekend he or she gets the assignment to really begin their work rather than waiting until the night before. This allows them a lot of time to ask me, or others, questions. If students do work together to solve the math problem, they need to write up the solution on their own.
Our first POW will be given in the beginning of October.
Here is a Google Doc of the format. "Make a Copy" to edit your own. Be sure to edit the title to match the POW name.
