Entertainment of Molly and Luna, Luna hearing the Bb scale for the first time so I can record my other videos without them freaking out.... :)

Beginning Band Teaching Videos

Dotted Quarter Note Introduction

For the week of 3/30, Beginning Band students must watch the video on dotted quarter notes, participating when the video asks you to pause/clap/try on your instrument. Your goal is to understand how dotted quarter notes work for this week. The video ends with showing you three measures with dotted quarter notes. You will need these three options for your challenge for the week of 4/6 for your flip grid.

Flip Grid for 4/6-4/10 Directions:

Before you take your Flip Grid video, get a piece of paper out and draw the rhythm you picked on your paper. Then, carefully write the counts in. If you get stuck, go back through the video and use me to help you, but the goal would be that you can figure it out yourself. Be sure you have the metronome ready to go (click here if you didn't already open it in the assignment area of Google Classroom).

Practice a bit without videoing, both clapping/counting and try playing on your instrument. When you are ready, complete your flip grid video in the following steps:

1. Say which option you picked (1, 2 or 3)

2. Set the metronome to at least 90, but can pick any tempo you would like. State the tempo that you have it ticking at so I know. (be reasonable, and it MUST be steady-- that is the point of working on counting!) and have it tick audibly in the video.

3. Clap and count the rhythm out loud with your metronome ticking. The goal is to be steady with your metronome tick.

4. Perform the rhythm on any note of your choice. Percussion may choose to perform on a mallet or on their snare pad.

Optional 5: Make up a song to your rhythm by picking various notes in the correct rhythm. Get creative and have fun. You can make a separate Flip Grid for this if you want some more time to tinker!

Dotted Quarter Note Songs

(These are in your Essential Elements Book)

Remember, you can play along with recordings of your book here! It even has the music on the screen for you! Don't forget to use this as a fun practice tool to feel like your in band class again, and play with a virtual buddy!

  • See #111 (percussion complete these on mallets). This shows you how to do it with ties first and throws the dotted quarter note in there too, just like my video. I highly recommend doing this one with a metronome (click here) set to 90 beats per minute (or adjust it faster or slower depending on how much of a challenge you'd like).

  • Added Challenge: see #113 (don't do #112, because there is a new note in the key signature which we haven't talked about yet).

  • Expert Challenge: Can you figure out how to do a dotted quarter note when they put the eighth note first? See #116-- ask me for help with this with a video lesson!
