I apolozize for my absense from updating this page. January was a month full of interuptions, making consistent classroom lessons challenges. Between snow days and guest speakers I focused on goal setting for the new year and remembering important academic skills like listening. Each classroom was also visted by guest speakers from the Families and Childrens Council teaching students how to "Take Charge of Your Body".

February is bring back our routine and so I have started to teach about careers.

In Kindergarten I will teach students how our career as a student relates to our career someday as an adult. We will also talk about how we choose a career, based on what we like to do and what we are good at. We will also explore a variety of different careers.

In 1st grade, I will share what I discussed with the kindergarters. We will do an activity that lets the students match tools that different careers use and the different subjects that we should work hard at in school do well at that career. We will explore careers with more difficult names to remember.

In 2nd grade we will watch a video that names lots of different careers. The students will write down a career they hear that matches every letter of the alphabet. After the video they will pair and share to help each other out and then we will share out as a group. The students will hear that there are so many different options to what they may want to do when they grow up!

3rd graders will play "Name that Career"! After naming the career, as a group choose to watch a short video clip about the career or not, based on their interest level. We have 40+ careers to name and so we won't be able to watch them all, but the students know how to find them on their own time to continue their learning!

In 4th grade students we will discuss how working in our ideal career will be a process (exploration, education/training, interviewing). We will watch a video that will help us understand the process and then pair up and work on identifying how this process relates to different careers.

5th graders will use the website, mynextmove, to complete a questionaire that identifies what careers would be great matches for them based on the answers they give today. Some students will be very surprised by their results. We will use the information for future discussions in class.
